Vikings and Cyclones split volleyball finals

Sarnia, ON - The LSSAA girls volleyball finals went Friday night at Lambton College, and Northern and St. Christopher's
would meet in both the junior and senior finals, splitting the victories between each other.

In the junior final, the top seeded Cyclones would lose the first set 25-15, but would bounce back with three straight set victories
25-15, 25-12 and 25-17 to take the junior final.

Haley Potvin lead the Cyclones attack with 10 kills and 15 service aces, earning the player of the match honours, while Jess Vanderburgt was also deadly at the service line, putting in 13 aces of her own as well as 6 assists. Mackenzie Turner had 11 service aces and 3 kills in the victory.

Northern was lead by Melissa Bennett with 10 kills, 10 aces and two blocks at the net, while Cassidy Crowe added nine kills, five aces and a block. Northern would hit only 27 aces in the match while the Cyclones would get 52 aces.

St. Chris was 13-1 on the season with their only loss coming against Northern at the start of February. Northern was 11-3 on the year.

  In the senior final, the Vikings would take the championship in four sets, winning the first 25-16 before dropping the second 19-25.
They would come back with two straight sets for the match, winning 25-14 and 25-20 for the victory.

Mackenzie Colbran was the player of the match for the Vikings, earning 15 kills and four aces in the match, while Deanna Ritchie served for 19 aces and added two kills for herself. Melanie Lumby had 15 assists in the match and six aces, as Northern would serve for 49 aces in total.

Laurenne D'Esterre would be the player of the match for the Cyclones, earning seven kills and two aces, while Valerie Spano had 11 assists and seven aces in the loss. Kylene D'Esterre would spread her stats across the board, earning five kills, one block, five aces and one assist. Jessica Taylor would also add five kills, a block and four aces.

Northern finished the regular season 9-1 and in first place, while St. Chris finished 6-4 and in third, upsetting St. Clair in the semi-finals. Northern last won the senior championship in 2009-2010.
