Sarnia, ON -
The Nickel City Rebels needed overtime to win the
Atom AA Boys Silver Stick Championship Sunday
afternoon, defeating the Toledo Cherokee 2-1.
The game
would be a goalie duel between the Cherokee's Devon
Bobak, and the Rebels Austin Pawluk, as neither
goalie would allow a goal in the first two periods
of play, taking the game into the third still tied
at 0-0.
Toledo had
a chance to go ahead as Collin Spencer had a
breakaway chance but was stopped by Pawluk. The puck
would then go back the other way where Jamie Wahamaa
would get his own breakaway and he would make a
mistake, sending a wrist shot past Bobak for the 1-0
Rebels lead.
The
Cherokee would look for the equalizer, and with a
scramble in front of the net, the puck would come
out onto the stick of Lewis Rowan who would get it
past Pawluk to tie the game at 1-1.
Overtime
would be required, but it wouldn't last long, as 16
seconds into the period, Landon Thomson would break
past the defence and cut across the top of the
crease, sliding the puck past Bobak, and giving the
Rebels a 2-1 overtime victory for the Atom AA
Championship.
Nickel
City went 2-1-0 in the round robin, defeating the
Florida Jr. Everblades 11-2, shutting out the
Michigan Nationals 6-0, but lost their third game
4-2 to the Troy Sting. They would play the
Montgomery Blue Devils in the semi-finals where they
would advance to the finals with a 4-3 win.
Toledo
went 2-0-1 in their round robin games, defeating the
Hershey Jr. Bears 3-1, the London Jr. Knights 2-1,
and tied the Blue Water Stars 4-4. They would take
on the Mississauga Jets in the semi-finals and win
3-2.
