Ottawa, ON - After missing the last eight games with
a knee injury, Nail Yakupov returned to the Sarnia
Sting line up Friday night but would be part of the
Stings third straight loss, as they fall to the
Ottawa 67's 5-2.
Yakupov
who has been out since January 5th after suffering
the injury in the Gold Medal game of the World
Junior Hockey Championship, had a goal but was a
minus-1 on the night, while the top prospect looked
to be out a form for the most part of the game.
After a
scoreless first period, Taylor Fielding would come
on a two-on-one break and keep the puck, putting a
soft shot five-hole on JP Anderson for the 1-0 lead.
The 67's would add to their lead as OHL leading
scorer Tyler Toffoli would score his 37th goal of
the season, wristing a shot past Anderson for the
2-0 lead. Ryan Spooner would get his 18th of the
season for Sarnia to cut the lead before the end of
the period.
In the
third, Ottawa would put their lead back up to two
goals as Cody Ceci would score on the power play
with a deflected point shot. Sarnia would respond
quickly, as Yakupov would cause a turnover inside
the Ottawa zone and put a low shot on Petr Mrazek
for a 3-2 game.
24 seconds
later though the 67's would get another one back on
Anderson, as Mike Cazzola would drop a pass off to
Shane Prince and who would beat the goaltender with
a long wrist shot. Cazzola would add an empty net
goal for his third point of the night, as the 67's
top the Sting 5-2.
JP
Anderson made 34 saves as the Sting were out shot
42-39. Sarnia had 26 shots in the third period, and
could only get 16 on net through the first two
periods.
The loss
is the third straight for the Sting, who continue on
a three game road trip as they will head to
Belleville on Saturday night, and finish in Kingston
on Sunday afternoon.
