Sarnia Major Atom MD went to the finals in St. Thomas Tournament

The Sarnia Jr. Sting Major Atom MD competed in the St. Thomas Minor Hockey AE tournament this weekend and made it to the final game losing 1-0 to the Markham Waxers.

Sarnia started off the tournament by defeating the host team 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the St. Thomas Timken Arena. Goals were scored by Spencer Baillie; assist Beynon Jonas, Nathan Oliphant; assist Tyler Talbot-Ellis, and Cole Goosens with two. Both of Cole's goals were assisted by Evan Trigatti and Ryan Eyre. Stevie Schaefer played a solid game in net earning the shut-out.

This year the team has adopted a practice of awarding a coachs "player of the game" puck and a parents "player of the game" puck to the individuals who stood out during the game, either by their hard work, smart play or other quality. In game one of the tournament Spencer Baillie was awarded the coach's puck while Kaz Gudelis was awarded the parents puck.

In the evening game on Friday the Jr. Sting faced off against the Markham Waxers and won by a score of 3-2. Collin Zimmer got two goals and Nathan Oliphant got the game winner. Spencer Bailey was awarded two assists and Mat Waun, Ryan Eyre and Ian Bailey picked up singles. Ian Bailey and Spencer Baillie shared the Coachs puck. Cole Goosens was awarded the parents puck. Cameron Stevens was between the pipes for the Jr. Sting this game and held off a late flurry to preserve the win.

Game three was played on Saturday at 1:30 and the Major Atoms played the Lambeth Lancers, coming away with a 5-0 victory. Ryan Eyre had two goals while Cole Goosens, Spencer Baillie and Collin Zimmer had one goal each. Assists were given to Mat Waun with two, Collin Zimmer, Evan Trigatti and Kaz Gudelis with two. Stevie Schaefer picked up another shut-out this game for the Jr. Sting. Evan Trigatti was awarded the coachs player of the game and Kaz Gudelis was the parents pick.

Game four on Saturday evening was a lopsided contest with Sarnia over the Lasalle Sabres 10-0. Goals were scored by Spencer Baillie from Collin Zimmer and Mat Waun, Ryan Eyre from Evan Trigatti and Cole Goosens, Collin Zimmer from Spencer Baillie and Mat Waun, Spencer Baillie from Collin Zimmer and Mat Waun, Cole Goosens from Ryan Eyre and Evan Trigatti, Evan Trigatti from Ryan Eyre and Cole Goosens, Greg Ross from Nathan Oliphant, Evan Trigatti from Ian Bailey and Mat Waun, Nathan Oliphant from Nathan Abbott and Cole Goosens and Collin Zimmer from Damon Skinn-Wai and Cole Goosens. Cam Stevens earned the shut out this game for Sarnia. Nathan Abbott was the coachs player of the game and Collin Zimmer was the parents player of the game.

The Championship game was played at the Timken Arena on Sunday at 1:00 against the Markham Waxers and ufortunately the contest ended with Markham scoring the games only goal early in the third period. Sarnia would pull the goalie Stevie Schaefer to the bench in the last minute of play but could not beat the Markham defence. Stevie Schaefer was the coachs pick for player of the game and Aiden Clark was the parents choice.

The Jr. sting get back to league action when they host the London Nationals on Thursday November 24 at the Germian Arena. Puck drops at 6:30.
