For the first time in their 7 seasons of operation, due to the expansion of the league, the Sarnia Flag Football Association hosted a play-off weekend starting with the quarter-finals on Saturday November 26 and semi-finals on Sunday November 27.
Quarter-final Saturday started with the 5th place Phoenix's Phoenixes eliminating the 4th place ANWIS Heat by a score of 32-21. In the second QF game, the 3rd ranked Bluewater Power Titans made short work of the 6th placed HSE Integrated/CIS Roughnecks eliminating them by a score of 56-01. With these victories, the Phoenix and Titans advanced to the Semi-finals played the next day.
Semi-final Sunday could easily be called the Mud Bowl as a night of rain greated the teams for the day of football. SF-1 featured the Phoenixes hoping their luck would hold as they played a hard game against the 1st place Power Champs. However, the Champs slogged through the mud defeating the Phoenix 40-20.
In the second SF game, the 3 year rivalry between the Titans and the 2nd ranks Lambton Metal Service Rampage played out once again. In an extremely close and competetive match, both teams vied for the lead as the game progressed. Rampage scored first but on the convert, Titans DB Jim Grasse intercepted the errant pass and ran the full field back to steal the single point conversion. As the play continued and time ran out, this single point advantage proved to be the straw the broke the Rampage back as the Titans eliminated the Rampage by a final score of 27-26.
And so the stage is set for the Bluewater Cup Championship next Sunday, December 04. The Power Champs hope to complete their push and become only other name on the championship cup while the 6 time defending champs, the Bluewater Power Titans will try to keep their dynasty alive with the 7th straight championship. Kick-off is at 1:00 at Lansdowne Park in Sarnia.
The SFFA would also like to remind players and supporters that the league will be hosting its annual Awards Banquet on Friday, December 02 at Stokes Inland Bar and Grill starting with cocktails at 5:30, dinner at 6:30 and awards at 7:30.
