Point Edward Atom Blackhawks Need Win to

Capture First in Lambton-Middlesex League Action

The Point Edward Atom Blackhawks hosted the league leading Ilderton Jets White team to finish their regular season and needed a win to capture the regular season first place spot and they did it in a convincing 6-1 win.

Right from the puck drop, everyone knew it was going to be a close game against the two league leaders with both teams fighting for the top spot going into the playoffs. Action was end-to-end and both teams had a few good scoring opportunities. The defense and goalies came up big to keep the game at 0-0 after one period of play.

The second period continued as the previous ended with some great hockey being played with the Point Edward and visiting crowd on the edge of their seats. Neither team was able to break the tie until the closing minutes of the period. With just less then two minutes to play in the period, the Jets struck first in a scramble in front of the Points net to make it 1-0. With the Point crowd still quiet from the heart breaking first goal, the Hawks made them cheer 50 seconds later when Jett Terpstra struck gold with Edlington assisting but Terpstra and the Hawks were not finished yet. Seven seconds later, Terpstra won the face-off and the Hawks charged down the ice where Terpstra gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead going into the third period.

Ilderton was a bit confused from the play and the Hawks didn’t let up. With less than a minute into the period, Lewis Haagsma scored off a Noah Best set-up pass, making it 3-1 for the Hawks. Knowing the strength of Jets, the Point didn’t let them off the hook and they knew they needed to continue to fight as shown by Caley extending the lead to 4-1 one minute later. The Jets finally caught their breath and settled in to play hockey but the damage was done and the Point put in two more for good measure by Best and Edlington to give the Point Edward Blackhawks the regular season Lambton-Middlesex West division title.

The Hawks now prepare for the playoff’s which start after Feb 8^th.
