Sarnia Ball Hockey League

With week 4 in the books now, there are only 2 teams that are perfect, and now down to only winless teams, and for a third week in a row the league saw a game go to OT.

On the Red Rink, where the 7pm game was home to one of the best battles of the night, maybe even the season as Huard’s Team went head to head with Team Canada. Coming into the game, both teams had perfect 3-0 records and were hoping to improve to 4-0, but obviously only one could do that. The first period got underway, and both teams came out hard with both teams taking shots whenever possible, at 11:20 into the first, it was Chris Jolly who would pick up a loose ball, and what look to be a weak shot, was able to score his league leading 5th of the season, unassisted to give Huard’s team the 1-0 lead. Later on, Huard’s Team would give Team Canada a chance to tie, as they would be given a bench minor for too many men, but Huard’s Team would kill this penalty off and keep their 1-0 lead after 1. As far as the shot clock, both teams had 8 shots each and Team Canada was 0-1 on the PP.

In the 2nd the action picked up a little as Team Canada was looking to tie the game, and once again Huard’s team got into some penalty trouble, as Mark Allen would get called for high sticking the ball.  Team Canada would send out their powerplay unit for the second time hoping for better results, they applied pressure but were unable to score, especially due to the shot blocking from Huard’s penalty killers. The best chance Canada had on that powerplay, the shot was blocked fearlessly by Alan Rogers. However Team Canada would get a 2 man advantage and would finally make good on it just after the 1st penalty expired, as Nick Pashalinos would bang home the ball unassisted, at the 5:50 mark of the second, tying the game and putting his team 1-3 on the PP. Exactly one minute later Mark Allen would hit Chad Jolly with a pass, and the ball would find itself in the back of the net, putting Huard’s Team back in the lead, 2-1. A little later, Mark Allen had a beautiful chance, as he just danced around the D and thought he had Vandenheuven at his mercy, but the Team Canada goalie would turn him a way with the all mighty poke checked to keep his team within one. Team Canada despite dominating on the shot clock 9-3 in the 2nd, were still down by a goal heading into the 3 rd, but would start the 3rd on a PP as Chris Barton had been called for a trip, late in the 2nd.

Starting in the 3rd on the powerplay helped Canada get back in this one, as just 1:24 in Michael Shaw puts one by Dave Mitchell, to put his team back in it and bring them to life. They would not be able to enjoy it for too long as, Mark Allen gets one unassisted, as he went 5 hole just under a min later again, so 2:16 into the 3rd and Huard’s Team is back in the lead 3-2. From there Team Canada continued to press, taking shot after shot most of which were either blocked or missed the net, then for the first time in the SBHL, a penalty shot was awarded to Team Canada, as Nick Pashalinos was tripped up as he went in alone on Mitchell. Pashalinos was come in on the penalty shot with a chance to tie it, but after trying to deke Mitchell, would shoot the ball wide of the net, and the score would remain 3-2 in favour of Huard’s Team. Team Canada would eventually tie this one up though, as his team franticly tried for the tie, they kept missing the net, but Flemming would finally bury one by Mitchell with the assists going to Cook, and Fraser. So with just over 3 minutes left, it is a 3-3 game. The buzzer would sound, and overtime would be needed for the 3rd straight week, this time though, to decide who continues their winning streak.

It wouldn’t take long to find an overtime winner, as Clayton Williams would put it back to the point to Davidson, who would put it over to the other point man Mark Allen, who already had a 2 point game going, he would wind up and blast it, and that was the game, just 2:30 into OT, Allen has his 2nd of the night and Huard’s Team moves to 4-0, and see’s there winning streak continue, while Team Canada would drop to 3-0-1 but still remain undefeated in regulation.

Over on the Blue Rink, it was the 3-0 Steamers against the 2-0-1 Fajitas. Dach Hiller would start the scoring for the Steamer’s, putting one by Cody Lajoie to put his team up 1-0 in the 1st, Willems and Brown would get the assists. Then Zach MacQueen would take a pass from Faulkner, making it 2-0 in favour of the Steamer’s quickly. The Fajita’s though, would come right back from that goal and get one of their own as John Dunn would get one by Ray Donkers to keep his team within one goal. This would be all the excitement the 1st had to offer, as both teams were even on the shot clock at 5 a piece, and both teams went penalty free.

In the second it would seem as both teams played a tight defensive again, as only one goal would be scored in the period, it would come late as well as Adam Marshall would light the lamp with 2:43 left, Abercrombie and Burt would pick up the assists. Once again it was close on the shot clock, with a slight edge goin to the Steamers as they led 5-4 in shots and 3-1 on the scoreboard. The Fajitas did have one powerplay chance, but could not get it by Donkers and were 0-1 on the PP.

As the 3rd period began, the Steamers were just looking to hold on to their 2 goal lead and remain undefeated, so we saw another period with not very many shots, as the Steamer’s led the shot clock 8-7, but this was certainly the most action the game had seen. Both teams would get a chance on the PP in the 3rd, but neither team could convert as between the defense and goaltending, no one could buy a goal. Then with a minute left, Steamer’s captain D’Arcy Brown would put the nail in the coffin, as he put it by Lajoie for the 4-1 lead, Faulkner would pick up his 2 nd assist on the night. Adam Desotti would try to spark some sort of a comeback as he scored with 49 seconds left, but it was certainly too late, as the Steamer’s would hold on and win the game, keeping their streak alive and moving to 4-0 on the season, while the Fajitas drop to 2-1-1.

As the 8pm game on the Red Rink would start, you could tell it was the same night that game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals was on, as both benches looked a little short, with many healthy scratches. In this game it was the Crazy Canuck’s Vs the Jeff Calvank's Team in a battle of the 0-3 teams. Calvank's Team would come out strong in the first period at times looking like a completely different team then we had seen in the past weeks, including scoring the first goal of the game, as Dave MacLachlan would score just 4:21 into the game, giving Calvank's Team their first lead of the year. Moments after Mark Parker would be robbed on a breakaway by Canuck’s back up tender Mike Lotz, only to be denied minutes later again by Lotz, Parker had the wide open side, but Lotz managed to get there in time and keep the ball out of the net. At the other end Teasell was making some big saves as well, as he robbed Ryan Holmes who got by everyone except the goalie. But Jordan Pennessi would tie it for the Canuck’s 11:54, Ryan Holmes and Joel Workman would pick up assists on the play. After the 1st period, Calvank's Team not only led the first period shot clock for the first time 13-7, but had more shots in that period than in any other game and were tied with the Canucks 1-1 after 1.

Not a lot happened in the second, as it was the Canuck’s turn to dominate the shot clock, but Joel Workman would score 2:27 into the 2nd, as Nic Pennessi would give it over to Jordan Pennessi, only to pass it out front to Workman and see it go by Teasell for the 2-1 lead. From there The Canucks would get their only chance on the PP, but would come up empty as Teasell proves the old adage, your best penalty killer is your goaltender, making stop after stop to keep his team in it. Ryan Holmes though would get one late in the 2nd, with just 27 seconds left, from Workman and Jordan Pennessi, giving Workman and J Pennessi 3 pts each on the night. After 2, the score was 3-1 for the Canuck’s and they dominated the shots 14-4 for a 2 period total of 21-17.

The 3rd period was all Canuck’s, and for the most part, all Jordan Pennessi, Joel Workman and Ryan Holmes as they were all over the score sheet. The Canuck’s would explode with 5, 3rd period goals and take this one easily 8-2, as it would appear that Calvank's Team may have worn themselves down after the first 2 periods. In the end Jordan Pennessi would set the record for most points, and assists in a game, scoring the hat trick and added 6 helpers for an amazing 9 point game. Workman would score 2 and assist 5, while Holmes would have a hat trick and 5 assists.

Over on the Blue Rink, it was the Yellow Buckets (1-1-1) Vs The Ale-er’s (0-3). The Ale-er’s come into this game still searching for their first win of the season, while the Yellow Buckets were looking to get above .500. The first period was all Yellow Buckets, as they out shot the Ale-er’s 6-2 and scored twice, Craig Wise started the scoring a little over 10 minutes in, Eric Thorne picked up the lone assist on that goal as the Buckets jump out 1-0. Then just 3 minutes later Grant Goosens gets one by Jake Dubois, and the Buckets lead 2-0 at this point, Thorne got another assist on that goal as well.

In the 2nd, the Bucket’s defense would continue to limit the Ale-er’s shots, only allowing 3 in the 2nd, making Ben Johnson’s night in net very easy, Dubois on the other hand would face another 5 shots stopping all of them for a scoreless 2nd period. After 2 it was still 2-0 Yellow Bucket’s and they continued to lead on the shot clock 11-5.

The Ale-er’s would make a push for it in the 3rd, taking more shots in this period than the previous 2, but to no avail as Johnson would turn away all 7 shots from the Ale-er’s to preserve his first shut out of the season, and Kyle Williams would add another goal for the Bucket’s, assisted by Scott DeGroot and Eric Thorne once again. In the end The Yellow Bucket’s take this one 3-0, and led the shots 20-12 to move to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Ale-er’s drop to 0-4.
