Week 3 is in the books, and not a lot has changed as
the 3 undefeated teams, remain undefeated and the
winless teams are still winless.
On the Red Rink between the 2-0 Cleveland Steamers
and the winless Crazy Canucks. Neither team would
start their #1 goalies as Steamers went with backup
Ray Donkers in goal and the Canucks called upon
Mitch Holmes to get in between the pipes in the
absence of Passingham. Adam Marshall would start the
scoring, netting his 2nd of the season just under 5
minutes into the game, Joe Burt and Chris Moore pick
up the assists. From there the Canucks played a
great defensive game, repeatedly blocking shots and
shutting down the Steamers offence. The Canucks
would tie it up midway through the 1st on Shaun
Benoit's 1st of the 2009 campaign on a great
individual effort behind the net, putting it by
Donkers.
From there both teams stepped up the defence and
ended the 1st half in a 1-1 tie. In the second half
the Steamers would get their offence going as Adam
Marshall scores his second of the game and 3rd of
the year, after Matt Abercrombie hit him with the
pass, making it 2-1 Steamers just under 5 minutes in
again. Midway through the final half the Steamers
would score again to take a 2 goal lead as Jordan
Hurst would get his 1st of the season unassisted at
10:24 of the 2nd. Down 3-1 the Canucks tried to claw
there way back into this game, but saw that
opportunity vanish as Abercrombie took a feed from
Steamers captain D'arcy Brown and put it past Mitch
Holmes to put his team up 4-1 to put the nail in the
coffin, with just under 2 minutes remaining. Jordan
Pennessi would score for the Canucks, but it was too
little too late with only 23 seconds remaining, the
Crazy Canucks would remain winless in their first
three games and lose this one 4-2. All in all though
a great game for both teams, and the Canucks showed
that they have a chance, proving their defence can
do a good job of shutting down some of the top
players. With the victory The Steamers remain
undefeated and move to 3-0 and stay tied for 1st.
Over on the Blue Rink The Ale-ers hoped to snap
their 2 game losing skid and get their first win of
the season, up against Mike Huards Team who came
into the game 2-0. It would be a tough task as
Huards Team leads the league in goals for with 12,
and only allowing 4 goals in just 2 games. The Ale-ers
would get off to a good start in the first, scoring
9 minutes in, Jordan Lockery got his 1st of the
season on a shot that beat dave Mitchell, Garret
Mayberry picked up the lone assist on that goal. All
seemed well for the Ale-ers, they led on the shot
clock as well as the scoreboard, then with just
under 2 minutes to go in the 1st, Kirk Ross scores
an unassisted goal for his 1st of the year and tied
it up at 1-1. Then about a minute later with just 35
seconds to go in the first, Chris Solly buries his
league leading, 4th goal of the season to give his
team a 2-1 lead heading into the 2nd. Mike Huard and
Marty Davidson would each get an assist on that
goal. After 1, the Ale-ers, despite leading the shot
clock 10-4, head into the 2nd down 2-1 giving Huards
Team a 50% shooting percentage.
As the 2nd half began, disaster would strike for the
Ale-ers, as 47 seconds into the half, Brian Williams
scores from Clayton Williams and Mark Allen to go up
3-1. Huards Team would not hold back as they would
light the lamp 4 more times before the Ale-ers could
respond, as Huard would score one and assist another
to finish with a goal and 2 assists to take the
league lead in points with 7 (G 2, A 5). Brian
Williams would also have a multi point with 2 goals,
snapping his goalless streak, Mark Allen would also
add a goal to go with his earlier assist. Although
with 3:49 to go the Ale-ers would get a goal from
Mayberry, but with the score 7-2 with just minutes
to go, a comeback would be impossible, as Huards
Team would win it 7-2 the final, giving them 5 or
more goals in all three games this season and back
to back 7 goal games. Huards Team would also end the
game with a 53% shooting percentage scoring 7 out of
13 shots.
The late game on the Red Rink was home to a
slaughter, as Team Canada would dominate Jeff
Calvank's Team, in a game that saw Jamie Fraser set
2 league records, the first one being the fastest
goal to start a game. Fraser would put a shot by
Teasell just 11 seconds in to put his team in front
1-0. Fraser would go on to score twice more and add
2 assists for a 5 point game, setting the record for
most points in a game. After 1, despite staying
close in shots, Calvank's team would trail 4-0. In
the 2nd, Team Canada dominated, outshooting their
opponents 19-6 and scoring 5 more times, including a
beautiful play where Ryan Cook would send the ball
up the floor to a waiting Aaron Levy, who would
bring it in and then send it cross crease to Jarrod
Coleman who put it by a sprawling Teasell to make it
6-0. In the end Team Canada would win it 9-0 to go
3-0 on the season and out shot Calvank's Team 34-18,
and although they buried 9, Teasell was pretty good
in net, making some unbelievable saves at times
including one where he was down and out, and at the
last second kicked out a pad to make the save. Ryan
Cook would have quite the game as well, scoring two
and adding 2 assists,
Pashalinos, Brad Lepore, Coleman, Levy and Moore
would all have 2 point games as well.
And last but not least, another exciting game
involving Feed Us Fajitas and the Yellow Buckets.
The Fajitas would score early in the first to take
the 1-0 lead, on a goal by Mike Rapaich, with Tyler
Peters getting the Assist. Peters would then score
about 4 minutes later from Rapaich and Marshall to
take an early 2-0 lead. The Yellow Buckets would
answer back though, as Scott DeGroot would take a
pass from Curtis Crombeen and get it by Lajoie to
cut the lead to one. However Scott Berry would
regain that 2 goal lead putting one by Ben Johnson
with just 5:30 remaining in the first, Marshall
picks up his 2nd assist on the game, the other
helper went to John Dunn.
After one the Fajitas led 8-5 on the shot clock, and
3-1 on the scoreboard. On the powerplay the Fajitas
were 0-1, while the Buckets went 0-2. From here the
Yellow buckets would come back to tie the game as
Craig Wise would score 2 unanswered goals to make it
3-3. This would be the score at the end of
regulation, and despite some more opportunities on
the PP, no one could get a goal on the PP, as the
Fajitas would be 0-2 and the Buckets would be 0-4 in
the game. We would go to OT for a second week in a
row, and once again the Fajitas are involved. Fresh
off their loss in OT to Team Canada, Feed Us Fajitas
were looking for some redemption in the form of a
win, they would get a great chance to do so, as the
Yellow Buckets would take a delay of game penalty
just 1:10 into the extra frame. Though the powerplay
unit had not done much in this game, they finally
get it working as Tyler Peters would take a feed
from Lee Stuart and put it by Ben Johnson just 2:10
into overtime, scoring on their 3rd shot. With the
win, the Fajitas move to 2-0-1 on the year, while
the Buckets drop to 1-1-1.
