Katic & Stamkos & the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge

The Ontario Hockey League announced today, Tuesday, October 30th, the Team OHL rosters and coaching staff for the 2007 ADT Canada-Russia Challenge.  The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium at 1:00PM.  The Russia team will be taking on the OHL team on Thursday, November 22nd in Kitchener and on Monday, November 26th in Sudbury.

Team OHL was selected by a management team consisting of Alan Miller, General Manager of the Sarnia Sting, Jeff Twohey, General Manager of the Peterborough Petes and Al Murray, Hockey Canada’s Head Scout for the Canadian National Junior Team. Players will be evaluated during this series in preparation of the final selection process for the 2008 World Junior Hockey Championships.

Among the 22 players named to the roster were the Sting’s own Steven Stamkos and Mark Katic.  Stamkos and Katic will be joining the OHL team just for the November 26th game in Sudbury due to scheduling conflicts.

With 13 goals under his belt already for the 2007-08 season, Steven Stamkos is looking forward to playing in the ADT CHL-Russia Challenge. Stamkos, who didn’t play in the ADT CHL-Russia Challenge last year but was named to the 2006-07 Western Conference All-Star Team, is currently leading the Sting in scoring.  He is hoping to use this game as a springboard to earning an invite to the World Junior Selection Camp in December.

Defenceman, Mark Katic, was a member of the Ontario squad for last years ADT CHL-Russia Challenge, as well was a member of the 2006-07 Western Conference All-Star team.  Katic injured his shoulder at the New York Islander training camp and has missed most of the season and has just returned to the Sarnia Sting lineup on October 18th.  Now 100% healthy, Katic is back and looking to make a statement in his efforts to earn a bid to the World Junior Selection Camp.

The ADT Canada-Russia Challenge features a team of Canadian Hockey League All-Stars representing each regional league that will compete against the Russian National Junior team.  Last year the CHL won all six games of the series and Team Canada would later go on to defeat Russia to win the gold medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championships.  The CHL has won the past three ADT Canada-Russia Challenges.
