It was a Strange one
but the Sting take the
win!
by Pat
Brethauer
In the first period
Saginaw scored first on
a powerplay goal at the
5:02 mark. Justin
DiBenedetto evened the
score later in the
period at 14:26 assisted
by Steve Stamkos and
Ryan Wilson.
Another powerplay goal
would put the Spirit up
2 - 1 at 16:19 and the
period ended with the
Spirit leading 2 - 1.
I arrived in the second
period after taking some
shots at the Petrolia
Squires home opener
game. Turning on
the radio I found that
the game was 8 minutes
away from ending in the
second period.
Before I arrived the
score was 3 - 3 as Ryan
Berard and Steve Ferry
had scored for Sarnia
and Saginaw added a
single to even things
up. I was in time
to witness what appeared
to be a powerplay goal
by Patrick Asselin from
a scramble in front that
was taken "upstairs" to
be reviewed. After
a couple of minutes the
decision came down that
the goal was good.
Before play resumed
Steve Whitely was
released from the
penalty box because of
the "goal". After
a couple of minutes of
play the referees were
then called over to the
timekeepers box and were
told that the off ice
officials reviewed the
tape from another angle
and the goal was
disallowed. The
referees then changed
their decision and took
the goal away from the
Spirit putting the score
back to 3 - 3. In
this weird turn of
events the play
continued Whitely didn't
return to the penalty
box to finish the
penalty and the Sting
went on to score to take
the lead.
Justin DiBenedetto
scored the 4th goal for
the Sting assisted by
Ryan Wilson and Steve
Stamkos. Before
the period finished the
Spirit tied things up on
a powerplay to end the
period at 4 all.
Up in the media area
after the period many
people were scratching
their heads wondering
what had just taken
place and stating that
this was the strangest
period that they had
ever witnessed.
In the third Saginaw
would regain the lead at
3:02, but a powerplay
goal for the Sting
evened things up.
Steve Stamkos scored the
powerplay goal assisted
by Ryan Wilson and Mark
Katic. Sixteen
seconds later Daniel
Lombardi would slap one
in to beat ex-Sting
goalie Parker VanBuskirk
and regain the lead.

As the game
was coming
to a close
in the final
minutes
Saginaw took
a penalty
but with the
action deep
in Sarnia
end they
pulled their
goalie and
Devin
DiDomete
found
himself open
and took it
in to score
into the
empty net.
Sarnia took
the win with
a final
score of 7 -
5. |
Saginaw outshot the
Sting by a total of 48 -
33. Tomi Karhunen
was the winning goalie
for the night and
Parker VanBunskirk
taking the loss.
There
were a total of 3,995
fans in the stands.
Generally a quiet crowd
it was fun to see and
hear some noise from the
crowd as they had a good
"wave" going around the
rink and making a lot of
noise. It was a
strange night after all.
The Sting are back in
action this Sunday when
they host Mississauga
with a 6:05 puck drop.
