Windsor Spitfires are
ready for what could be
a great final season in
their old Barn as the
Spitfires will move into
the new Windsor Family
Credit Union Centre
during the 2008-09
season. After going 5 -
1 in the pre-season and
defeating the Erie
Otters 10 - 3 in their
Season/Home Opener, they
continue their winning
ways with a 3 - 1win
over the Sting Thursday
night before a crowd of
2,824 fans.
Prior to the game the
Sting announced their
2007-2008 captains with
veteran defenceman Ryan
Wilson returning for his
second year as Captain,
the first time in club
history that one player
has served as the team
Captain for consecutive
seasons. Alternate
Captains are Harrison
Reed, Devin DiDiomete,
Steven Stamkos and Mark
Katic.
In the starting lineup
were the two overage
players that the Sting
acquired this week
through trades. Traded
from the Plymouth
Whalers was defenceman
Steve Whitely from
Petrolia and traded from
the Saginaw Spirit right
winger
Ryan
Berard from Niagara
Falls.
Penalties
were a major factor in
this game that cost the
Sting 2 goals. Tomi
Karhunen was outstanding
in net saving 47 of
50 shots while Windsor’s
Andrew Engelage saved 30
of 31 shots. With his
performance in net
Karhunen earned the #2
Star of the night.
The Sting would pull
Karhunen in the final
minutes of play but a
Sting penalty with 40
seconds remaining in the
final period ended the
Sting’s man advantage.
