Rapids Swimmers Dominate at Waterloo Meet

Seven of the 13 Sarnia Y Rapids I swimmers finished first at a swim meet in Waterloo on February 20. Twelve-year-old Liam Young swept his events –the 100m Individual Medley (IM), 100 m freestyle, 100 m backstroke, 50 m breaststroke and 50 m butterfly – earning five gold medals. His brother, Luke, age 10, added a 2nd (50 m breaststroke) and 4th place (100 m freestyle) finish to his three gold medals in the 50 m backstroke, 50 m butterfly and 100 m IM. Jacob Zerko, 13, earned gold medals in the 100 m IM and 100 m backstroke, and bronze medals in the 100 m freestyle and 50 m butterfly.

The girls also gave strong performances, as 8-year-old Nadine Osmon narrowly missed sweeping her events, earning gold medals in the 50 m freestyle, 50 m backstroke, 50 m breaststroke, and 50 m butterfly, and silver in the 100 m IM. Anjali Rawat, 13, swam to gold medals in the 100 m freestyle and 100 m breaststroke, and bronze in the 100 m IM and 50 m butterfly. Two more swimmers medalled in all their events -- Nadia Cartwright, 11, earned gold in the 50 m backstroke, silver in the 50 m butterfly and bronze in the 100 m IM and 100 m breaststroke, while Adelle Jonker, 13, earned silver in the 100 m IM, 50 m freestyle, 50 m backstroke, 50 m butterfly, and bronze in the 50 m breaststroke. Eight-year-old Samantha Bedard earned silver medals in the 50 m freestyle and 50 m backstroke and had 2 other top-5 finishes.

Sophie Stasyna’s hard work all season paid off as the 12-year-old swam to a silver medal in the 50 m breaststroke and bronze in the 50 m backstroke. McKenna Chalmers, 10, earned gold in the 50 m breaststroke, silver in the 100 m butterfly, and 4th place finishes in the 100 m freestyle and 100 m IM.
