Irish Fall to St. Chris but Get the Jump on Vikings
The Irish
dropped a disappointing 51-36 battle to St. Chris when they
played host to the Cyclones on Oct. 16. The Irish outplayed
the Cyclones in every aspect but shooting. Maggie Mullen
and Whitney Ryan both fouled out early in the fourth quarter
which shortened the Irish bench and was a contributing
factor in the loss. Mullen led the offence with 16 points.
Conchita Humphreys hit for 6 and Ryan, Chelsea Wagner and
Caitlin Sparks kicked in 4 each. Devin Galvin and Mullen
played strong defence pulling down 18 and 14 rebounds
respectively
It was a
different story just five days later when the Fighting Irish
outscored the Northern Vikings 24-6 in the opening eight
minutes and went on to whip the Vikings 55-36 at Northern on
Oct. 23.
St. Pat’s
jumped out to a 7-1 lead midway through the opening quarter
as Northern could not make a basket until the 4:25 mark.
The hot
shooting Irish then went to work with four, three-pointers,
two by Maggie Mullen, and one each by Whitney Ryan and
Conchita Humphreys. When the first quarter buzzer sounded,
the Irish enjoyed an 18 point lead.
The second
quarter was even, but the Irish were glad to head to the
locker room at halftime with a 33-12 advantage. Northern
attempted to play stronger defence in the third quarter, but
St. Pat’s was still able to make their shots count and the
Vikings were never able to cut the deficit by less than 16
points the rest of the way.
Mullen led
the Irish with 16 points followed closely by Humphreys with
12 and Devin Galvin and Ryan with 8 and 7 respectively.
The Irish
host the undefeated St. Clair Colts on Thursday, October 25
with the tip-off at 5:30 PM. |
