It was a change
of pace for Legionnaires' head coach Bill Abercrombie.
He is used to standing behind the bench at the Sarnia Arena
coaching his Legionnaire team, last night he coached the
LSSAA boys hockey all-star game. His Team Micor defeated
Dave Hill's Team Outfitters 7-4 in a battle of the best high
school hockey players in the county.
"It's always fun
coaching a game like this," Abercrombie said. "I do know a
lot of the kids from minor hockey."
It was only Abercrombie's second win in seven tries against
Hill. "We used to coach together, so it's fun to
compete a little," Hill said.
"We usually have a bet for a dinner but for some reason
(Abercrombie) never pays his debt."
The teams were tied 1-1 after 20 minutes. Starting
goaltenders Brandon Campbell and Sean Parker were the story
the first half of the game. They thwarted many
opportunities by the opposition. The one goal that
Campbell allowed was the first goal he has let in all
season. The LCCVI goal had started three games for his
undefeated team (posting three shut outs).
But after Joel Parker (LCCVI) scored his second goal of the
game to give Team Outfitters a 2-1 lead, Team Micor exploded
for three quick goals.
They took a 4-3 lead into the dressing room after 40
minutes. They never took their foot off the gas
peddle.
The line of
Codie Curtis (NLSS), Brodie Balcom (NLSS) and Colin Epps (NCIV)
dominated play, scoring four of the Team Micor goals. The
non-hit game went end-to-end for most of the game. "I
think eventually we will be beating store for store," Hill
joked.
To that Abercrombie laughed and replied "Well that would be
a great way to retire."
Action will continue today as the second place Northern
Vikings travel to Petrolia to take on the LCCVI Lancers, in
hopes of upsetting the undefeated team.
