The Northern Vikings Jr.
Football team began its season with a 28-19 win
over the St. Christopher's Cyclones.
Midway through the first
quarter, Northern put its first two points on
the board when a deep, bouncing punt ended with
a St. Christopher's player being tackled in the
Cyclone's endzone. The Cyclones responded a few
minutes later with a field goal. At 3:47 of the
1st, Northern's Cole Boersma took the ball on a
65 yard run for a touchdown. Tyler Annett added
the extra point.
The second quarter saw
Boersma again with the ball, this time from 15
yards out for another major. Annett was good
with the extra point. With a minute left in the
half, the Cyclones ran the ball in for a
touchdown and converted the extra point.
Halftime: 16-10, Vikings
In the 3rd quarter, the
Vikings took a punt deep in their own end and
conceded a two point safety. A Cyclones TD and
extra point with 1:00 minute remaining in the
quarter put the Cyclones ahead, 19-16. Just
before the 3rd quarter horn, the Vikings' Jace
Felton broke open a huge, 50 yard run for a
touchdown, but the Vikings were unable to
convert the extra point.
A couple of Viking field
goals by Tyler Annett in the 4th quarter put the
game out of reach and the Vikings went on to
win, 28-19.
Special mention must go to
Curtis Epps for a key interception in the 4th
quarter, and to Maitland Long, who played a
solid defensive game for the Vikings.
The Jr. Vikings see action
again on Thursday, September 25th, at home vs.
St. Pat's - game time 3:30.
