The St.
Clair Senior Boys' rugby team competed in the
Red Hot Tournament on Thursday May 7, the
largest and most prestigious high school rugby
tournament in Ontario and amongst the very best
in North America. The 2009 version is bigger
and better than ever with an anticipated total
of 80 teams competing in the junior and senior
boys divisions.
The Red Hot is important for seeding teams for
the Ontario championship tournaments that are
scheduled for one month later--the OFSAA AAA and
AA tournaments for senior boys and the Barbarian
Cup tournament for junior boys.
This
year the regional qualifying tournaments will be
held at various university sites (Pine Ridge
High School, Queens University, RMC, McMaster
University, University of Waterloo, University
of Western Ontario, and Trent University) across
the province so that high school players will
have a broader understanding of the
opportunities available to play high quality OUA
rugby after graduating from high school. The
hosting universities will be providing varsity
athletes as site organizers and they will also
provide information about campus life and
academics.
The Colts, playing
in the University of Waterloo division,
defeated St. Joan of Arc (Toronto) by a score
of 21-7 in their first game. Mitch Core, Joel
Clarke and Sean Robinson scored tries for St.
Clair, and Joel Clarke added 3 conversions. In
their second game the Colts defeated St. Marys
of Kitchener, 15-0 Dan Turley, Joel Clarke and
Sean Kudman scored for St. Clair in a overall
great team effort. The boys will travel to
Toronto on Sunday may 10 to play OFSAA AAA
powerhouse Saltfleet High School (Stoney Creek)
in the semi final.
