St. Clair Colts
The St. Clair Colts Junior Girls
Basketball team found themselves
in unfamiliar territory as they
not only hosted the Colt
Classic, they won it on
Oct.17th. As coach Kiri Kaija
said, she can't remember the
last time St. Clair won their
own tournament.
|
It was a great field
of teams as
previously unbeaten
Northern Vikings
came in as the
favourites only to
be defeated in the
semi-final by the
St. Christopher
Cyclones in an
overtime thriller.
St. Clair defeated
St. Anne's from
Tecumseh in the
other semi final to
set up a St.
Clair/St. Chris
final. Earlier in
the week, St. Chris
had handed the Colts
a 20 point thrashing
and the Colts were
out looking to
avenge the loss.
|
St, Clair jumped out to an early
14-5 lead as the Cyclones looked
a little tired after the OT win
over Northern. The lead was
short lived as St. Chris stormed
back and scored 16 straight
points for a 21-14 lead before
St. Clair could start to answer
back and were only down by 1 at
the half.
|
The second half was
back and forth for
the remainder of the
game as the lead
exchanged hands
several times and in
the 4th quarter it
became a game of
free throws. St.
Christopher's went
cold from the line
and St. Clair got
hot.
Ashley Bisson of the
Colts made 7 of 8
free throws down the
stretch including 2
with 7 seconds left
that gave St. Clair
a 4 point lead.
Sydney Stewart of
the Cyclones had cut
the lead to 3 with a
free throw of her
own but that was as
close as St. Chris
would get as St.
Clair ran out the
last 2 seconds and
took the
Championship with a
very exciting 43-40
win. |
In the final Bisson led the way
for the Colts with 15 points,
while speedy Alex Hodgins had 9
and Lexi Hanly had 8 as well as
finding her touch from the
outside. In the win over St.
Anne's, Amanda Knowles and
Hodgins led the way with 6
points each in the Colts 32-26
win and in first game action, a
50-30 win over Chatham-Kent,
Bisson was high scorer with 8
and Hodgins chipped in with 6
pts.
The
Colts were in Chatham for a
tournament Oct 23 and 24th and
were defeated Saturday afternoon
in the finals by St. Basils.
Tournament scores were not
available. The Colts now prepare
for 2 league games this week
against St. Christopher and
Northern.
