The Bluewater Boys u10 Soccer team
traveled to Mississauga and defeated a number of top
Toronto teams to bring home the coveted Mississauga
Falcon.
Bluewater opened the tournament
against the top ranked Clarkson Comets. A hard fought
game led by Justin Fazio and Adam Craievich ended the
first half with a 0-0 tie. But 5 minutes into the second
half a goal mouth scramble in the Bluewater crease
resulted in a Clarkson goal. Trailing Bluewater pressed
Clarkson hard and despite dominating on the field
Bluewater couldn’t score and just before the half ended
Clarkson scored again and the game finished 2-0 for
Clarkson. Solid play by Christian Mauti and Franco
Sproveiro kept Bluewater in the game throughout.
In the their second game of pool play; Bluewater faced
another tough Toronto area club - the Erin Mills Eagles.
Tight play back and forth saw this game go to half time
at 0-0. Midfield play by Ethan Shackelton and defense by
Joey Eddleston helped keep Erin Mills off the scoresheet.
Midway through the second half, Erin Mills scored to
take a 1-0 lead. Again Bluewater had to press to stay in
the game. With less than a minute to play, on a rebound
from a shot by Tim Kaldeway, Adam Craievich dropped a
ball down from his chest and punched it in with his knee
for the tieing goal. Final score Bluewater 1 - Erin
Mills 1.
In the Bluewater’s third game, they faced the host club,
the Mississauga Falcons. Playing their third game of the
day, Bluewater was tired but early in the first half
Jordan Walsh came flying into the crease to push a ball
off his foot into the goal for a 1-0 lead. Dominating
play by Bluewater forwards Ethan Shackleton and Justin
Fazio, kept the ball in the Mississauga end but
Bluewater was unable to convert for any more goals.
Solid defense by Joey Eddleston and Christian Mauti kept
Mississauga at bay and supported the Bluewater offense.
The game ended with a Bluewater victory 1-0. Goalie
Blake Maxfield earned the shutout for Bluewater.
In Bluewater’s final round robin game, the opponent was
Clairlea-Westview. Early in the first half, a bing-bang-bong
passing play originating from Tim Kaldeway, to Adam
Craievich to Jordan Walsh who then put the ball in the
net, gave Bluewater a 1 goal lead. Two minutes later on
a kick from goalie Blake Maxfield, Jordan Walsh trapped
the ball, broke for the net and fired a shot finding the
back of the net for a second Bluewater goal. The third
Bluewater goal was a team effort off the foot of Marco
DiFederico; a throw-in from Andrew Shortt to Justin
Fazio, who crossed the ball to set-up DiFedreico. Before
halftime, Bluewater added a fourth goal; from a corner
kick, Marco DiFederico to Andrew Shortt, who returned
the ball to DiFederico , who then kicked the ball in the
net. Half time ended with Bluewater leading 4-0. Despite
outstanding efforts from Bluewater players Franco
Sproviero, Ethan Shackleton, and Christian Mauti
Bluewater couldn’t add to their tally and the game ended
4 -0. Goalie Blake Maxfield earned his second shutout.
A 2-1-1 record earned Bluewater a berth into the
tournament final; with a return match against the
Clarkson Comets who went through the round robin
undefeated.
Before the final the overcast skies had opened up and
the field was soaked with rain, but as the opening
kick-off rolled around only a light drizzle was on the
field. But it made the field slippery and the ball and
players were sliding. Two minutes into the game
Bluewater opened the scoring on a lovely arcing shot
from the right side by Tim Kaldeway , after a pass from
Jordan Walsh. Shortly Clarkson tied it up to make it 1-1
and then, quickly after that Clarkson took a 2-1 lead
with a shot into the upper right corner of the net. With
a minute before halftime, from 25 yards Joey Eddleston
drilled a direct kick into the Clarkson net as both
teams were mixing it up in the crease in front of the
goalie. Half time ended at a 2-2 tie. Bluewater opened
the second half strong, carrying the play into the
Clarkson end. From the left wing after a pass from
Jordan Walsh a goal by Andrew Shortt came after he beat
2 defenders to give Bluewater a 3-2 lead. Five minutes
later a goal by Jordan Walsh after a give ‘n go from
Andrew Shortt extended Bluewater’s lead to 4-2. A goal
midway through the second half reduced the Bluewater
lead to 4-3. Effective counter attacking with solid
defense and outstanding goaltending by Franco Sproviero
kept Clarkson at bay until time ran out - resulting in a
Bluewater 4, Clarkson 3 victory. The victory gave
Bluewater, not only the game but the tournament victory
and the Mississauga Falcon.
In the trophy presentation,
Mississauga recognized Jordan Walsh as the MVP of the
Final game and noted this boys team has won 2
