After a convincing win last
Saturday, the BlueWater Jr. Blaze U-11 Premier squad
took to the field in Byron. The Blaze knew they would be
in for a battle against the third place Athletics Green.
Byron looked for an early lead and controlled the play
for the first 10 minutes. BlueWater was on its heels but
keeper Mario Hudson was sharp and kept the Blaze in the
contest. The Blaze found their confidence and Dilly
Ohuegbe broke through the Byron defence, battled the
sweeper and left footed the ball just wide of its mark!
Byron then pressed and a good through ball to a
streaking striker was challenged by the Blaze sweeper
Stephen Blysniuk, however a quick shot caught the inside
post on Hudson and Byron had the lead.
The Blaze continued to
battle and again Ohuegbe broke through only to be stoned
by the Athletics keeper. Byron had one more opportunity
before half, a quick release from their midfielder
allowed the winger to run on to the ball, a hard shot
and save by Hudson kept the score 1-0 at half.
In the second half, Byron
again attacked. Hudson made an aggressive challenge on a
charging Byron player, but was called for handling the
ball outside the 18 yard box free kick Athletics. The
Byron shot deftly headed away by Brent Arthurs kept
the score at 1-0.
Bluewater realizing they
needed an equalizer continued to pressure the Byron
defence. Janelle Labadie won the ball at
midfield, carried outside the 18 yard box and blasted a
drive that was stopped by the Byron netminder. Bluewater
continued to win loose balls as the game wore on. A
throw in headed on by Dylan Wardell to Ohuegbe was
sent wide to Ryan Lyle. The chip by Lyle just sailed
wide again Bluewater did not capitalize on a solid
chance.
With three minutes
remaining and the BlueWater defence moving up to look
for the tying goal, Byron was able to win the ball at
midfield. The pass up to the forward was resulted in the
ball being "trapped" between the players knees. A quick
"bunny hop" move to face the goal allowed the forward to
drop and pass the ball to the wing who sailed a high
shot over a leaping Hudson.
Final result Byron 2 BlueWater 0.
