July 7 - 8, 2007

The U18 Sarnia Spirit missed qualifying for the second round of Ontario Cup, feeling the “Stingers” from Aurora.

In the first match up of the round robin Ontario Cup tournament held at Veteran’s Field, the Spirit faced a rough and tough team from Mississauga, who play in the OYSL (Ontario Youth Soccer League). The Spirit found themselves down 2-0 at the half way point of the game. They needed to regroup and come out strong for the second half. Julie Kerr started the come back followed by Ashley Cechovsky to tie the match. With less than a minute to play, the Spirit was awarded a penalty kick taken by Danielle St. Germain, who helped record their first win of the tournament.
Then, 90 minutes later, they played their second match of the day against Vaughan, who also plays in the OYSL. The team from Sarnia defeated Vaughan by a score of 1-0 from a shot by Becky Lapensee that trickled past the keeper.

On Sunday, the girls faced a strong team from Aurora, who are ranked second in the province and also play in the OYSL, losing 5-0, ending the round robin with 2 wins and 1 loss and a total of 6 points. Aurora moves on to the second stage of Ontario Cup with 2 wins and 1 tie and 7 points. Mississauga finished with 1 win and 2 losses with 3 points and Vaughan finished with 1 tie and 2 losses with 1 point.

As of July 1st the Sarnia Spirit WOYSL U18 team is ranked 22nd in the province.
