Sarnia Spirit faced the
Windsor East Side Kickers in the first game of the West
Regional League Kick Off Cup and fell to a 4-2 loss.
First goal of the game was scored by Dominque Pasqual.
Later in the game the Spirit was given a penalty kick
when Rebeka Bates was tackled inside the Kickers' box,
which she was able to capitalize on. This wasn't enough
and Windsor was awarded the 3 points.
In the 2nd match of the tournament, the Sarnia Spirit
fought against the Kitchener Spirit to a scoreless 0-0
tie with each team receiving 1 point. Danielle St.
Germain recorded the shut out. This put the Sarnia
Spirit in 3rd place of their pool.
On the 2nd day of cup action the Spirit faced off
against the Guelph Royals and with seconds left in the
game Gillian Moore lobed a long shot over the Guelph
keeper's head to tie the game 1-1. The game found itself
being determined by penalty shots which required 8
shooters from each side. Mairi MacIntyre, Alicia
Hutchings, Danielle St. Germain, Maegan Knight, Ashley
Cechovsky, and Gillian Moore were successful in their
kicks. This 2-1 win over Guelph sent the Spirit to the
semi finals.
In semi final action, London City Fusion competed
against the East Side Kickers and the second match up
found Sarnia Spirit up against the Kitchener Spirit for
the second time in the tournament. With a goal by Mairi
MacIntyre the Sarnia girls had beat the Kitchener team
1-0. This was a very hard fought battle and many of the
girls by this point were battered and bruised but with
great determination and a lot of "heart", found
themselves in the tournament finals. In the final game,
they again faced off against the East Side Kickers. They
definitely had something to prove and using every ounce
of energy they had left beat the Kickers 2-1 from goals
by Taylor Huggett and Mairi MacIntyre to become the 2007
WOYSL Kick Off Cup Champions.
The coaching staff were very pleased and proud of how
the team competed and fought hard in this tournament.
The Sarnia Spirit team travels to Kitchener Monday May
14th for their first league game against the Kitchener
Spirit. Over the Victoria Day weekend they will be
travelling to Toronto to compete in the Dixie Show Case
Tournament where they will see some international
competition. |
