2007 Bluewater Jr. Blaze U12 Boys
WOYSL

The Bluewater Jr. Blaze travelled to Optimist Park to challenge the second place Byron squad. Bluewater kept Byron on the defensive in the early stages of the contest.  A free kick taken by Brent Arthur, ran past the Byron defence on to Marcus Dusseault. A left foot shot just missed the far post.

Arthur took a throw in, on to Nic VanBilsen who rushed down the wing and crossed the ball. Ricky Primeau deflected a header but couldn't beat the Byron goalie.

Byron capitalized on their first real scoring chance. A long cross, over Josh Graham in the Bluewater net, found an unmarked Byron winger who made no mistake firing the ball high into the corner of the net for a 1-0 Byron lead.

Justus Kerkof-Fox attempted to tie the score for the Jr. Blaze with a hard run and shot, but the Byron netminder was able to thwart the attempt.

Dilly Ohuegebe for the Blaze then crossed to Jenelle Labadie, a bicycle kick floated to the Byron goalie and the Bluewater remained down a goal.

Bluewater continued to fight. Labadie won the ball, forwarded to Dylan Wardell who controlled the ball and made a nice through ball to Ohuegbe. Dilly made no mistake on the breakaway to tie the score at 1.

Bluewater looked to take the lead when Labadie again found Wardell. Alone in front of the keeper, the Blaze striker could not chip the ball over the Byron keeper and the score remained tied.

Labadie controlled the midfield. A good pass to Ohuegbe on the outside allowed Dilly to cross the ball. Christian McCormick collected the cross and passed back to a charging Marcus Dusseault. Marcus hammered home the shot give Bluewater a 2-1 lead.

Byron did not panic against the underdog squad. 30 seconds remained in the half when a long Byron ball was not controlled by the Blaze fullbacks. An opportunistic shot found the back of the net and Byron had evened the contest at 2.

A steady rain greeted the players to start the second half. The field conditions became slippery and the tempo of the game slowed. Byron, looking not to be a gracious host, controlled the majority of the play. A collective sigh of relief was heard from the Byron parents when a shot high at the Bluewater net, slipped through the outstretched hands of Graham and gave the home team a 3-2 lead.

Bluewater was desperate to find a way to gain a point in the standings. VanBilsen energized the team with a long ball to Ohuegebe. Ohuegbe unselfishly passed to Dusseault in the middle of the pitch. Dusseault wisely spotted and unmarked McCormick who made no mistake deadlocking the contest at 3 with five minutes to play.

Graham was solid the remainder of the way, unyielding in a series of corner kicks from the Byron squad.

When the whistle sounded Bluewater had surprised the second seeded squad and earned a hard fought point.

Bluewater next plays in the Cambridge Heritage Tournament July 12-13. The next home game is July 12 vs. Guelph at 12:00 pm.
