WOSL League Cup

The Sarnia Fury advanced to the second round of the WOSL League Cup with a hard-fought, come from behind 3-2 victory over 1st Division side Woodstock.  Woodstock opened the scoring in the first half.  Possession in midfield, and a long pass down the wing saw a Woodstock forward in a foot race with the Fury 'keeper.  While Shane Bettridge was able to force the forward wide, he was able to square a pass into the box, where an advancing Woodstock forward was able to beat the Fury defence to the loose ball to make it 1-0.

The Fury made several substitutions at halftime and those changes seemed to pay off.  Substitute Liam Boshell scored his second goal of the campaign as he found himself one on one at the edge of the 18-yard box with a Woodstock defender, a quick step-over created the half a yard of space that Boshell needed and a swerving shot beat the Woodstock goalkeeper.

The scrappy Woodstock team continued to create chances, and with 10 minutes to go a defensive miscue by the Fury allowed the visitors to reclaim the lead.  A quick free-kick released a Woodstock winger down the right side, and an early cross found an unmarked forward at the edge of the six yard box for a free header.

The Woodstock lead was very short lived.  Liam Boshell's second goal of the game 10 seconds after the kickoff evened the score again.  Taking the ball directly from the restart, Liam Boshell dribbled several Woodstock players and the goalkeeper to tie the game at 2-2.

Extra-time would be needed to determine a winner in this Cup game, and the Fury came out determined to win the game quickly.  Des Betteto had a good chance to end the game, but his chip rolled agonizingly wide.  But seven minutes into the first extra-time session saw Boshell and Adam Lubus combine for the winner.  A superb through ball from Boshell found Lubus in a foot race with the advancing Woodstock 'keeper.  Lubus managed to chip the ball over the 'keeper and into the wideopen goal for the golden goal winner.

The Fury advances to take on the London Hungarians in the second round of the league Cup on Wednesday June 18 in Sarnia at the Dante Club.
