The
undefeated Sarnia Girls U-10 travelled to Chatham to play
the only other undefeated squad Monday May 26. The two teams
tied 2-2 in their respective season openers, May 6.
Chatham
struck early when and unmarked played turned and fired a
shot at keeper Emma Colman. Emma deflected the shot but the
ball trickled past her for the goal. Chatham caught the
Spirit defence with a through ball breakaway and took a 2-0
lead. Sarnia battled back, a corner kick resulted in a nice
3 way passing play between Kelly Hodgins, Katie Barwitzki
and Kristy Hodgins but the attempt was cleared by the
Chatham defender.
Kelly
Hodgins then found Vanessa Bucci alone in front, but the
shot sailed just wide. Asley Pettit scampered down the line
and crossed the ball to Kelly Hodgins who fired a hard shot
but was denied by the Chatham keeper.
Sarnia
continued with the offensive pressure however it was Chatham
that capitalized with another breakaway and a 3-0 halftime
lead.
Colman
was replaced in goal by Kelly Hodgins to start the second
stanza. Colman wasted no time in making her presence felt by
streking down the wing and finding Skylar Soininen but
Skylar could not beat the Chatham sweeper. Hodgins attempted
a goal kick, but an astute Chatham player jumped on the ball
and fired a rocket past Kelly to increase Chatham's lead to
4-0.
The
Spirit were undeterred and a flurry of offence ensued. A
throw in from Pettit to Colman on to Bucci rang off the
post. The ball was cleared but Soininen won the ball and
buried a shot in the bottom corner of the Chatham net 4-1
Chatham. Chatham attempted to increase their lead but twice
Vanessa Wardell denied the Chatham attack with hard tackles,
clearing the ball. Chatham capitalized again with a nice one
time shot from a good cross to beat the Spirit netminder. A
short while later, a determined Hodgins in the Sarnia net
made a charging save off her face to deny the Chatham
attack.
Alexa
Van Hoorn made a beautiful run down the sideline for the
Spirit but was denied by the last Chatham player back. The
ensuing counter attack resulted in a 5 on 1 in Chathams
favour. The Chatham team made no mistake by firing the ball
into the net. The final result was 6-1 Chatham.
Sarnia
next plays June 5 at home against Wallaceburg. |
