Sarnia Spirit U12
Middlesex United Tournament May 31-June 1st

Sarnia Spirit bring home the Gold

Game 1: Sarnia Spirit (2) vs. Middlesex United Canstars (0)

In the opening round of play, the girls came up against the Middlesex Canstars.  The first half proved to be trying for both teams, but Mackenzie Turner came up with some nice saves and along with some good defensive play, the Spirit kept the score to 0 for both teams going into the 2nd half.  After about 15 minutes of play, Alicia DaSilva found the corner of the net to put away the first goal for the Spirit.  Just 4 minutes later, Alicia DaSilva once again scored her 2nd goal to give the Spirit a 2-0 win.  Mackenzie Turner earned the shut out.

Game 2: Sarnia Spirit (1) vs. Byron Athletica (1)

In the second game of tournament action, the Spirit started out strong with most of the play down in Byron’s end.   After 17 minutes of play, Kierstynn Pettit chipped in a nice shot from just outside the 18-yeard box, giving the girls a 1-0 lead.  The Spirit’s defensive line and mid-fielders played very well stopping most attempts as Bryon approached the net.  Thanks to some great goaltending saves by Danielle, the girls ended up with a tie.  The girls ended up with a tie.  After the first day of soccer action, the Spirit ended up in first place earning a bye directly into the semi-finals.

Semi-finals: Sarnia Spirit (1) vs. Norwest Wildcats (0)

After 25 minutes of play, the score was at zero.  The Sarnia forwards and mid-fielders had several attempts at scoring, but unfortunately were unable to find the net.  Goalkeeper, Mackenzie Turner played very well in keeping the girls in the game.  The Sarnia spirit played very well and the defense did their job in keeping Norwest out of the 18-yard box.   With the weather changing and having to fight the wind and the ball bouncing hard, Hayley-Paige Potvin wound up at mid-field to fire a shot up over the head of the Norwest goalie giving the Spirit their first and only goal and the win!  The girls would now advance to the finals.

Finals: Sarnia Spirit (2) vs. Byron Athletica (2)
Sarnia Wins in Shoot Out (2  - 0)

The Spirit were up against Byron once again for the gold medal.  The girls were playing very well and played a very strong defensive game.  After 20 minutes of play, Naomi Dubs headed the ball into the net for a spectacular first goal.  At half time the score was 1-1.  The girls convened for a little pep talk at half time and knew just what they had to do in the 2nd half.  After two minutes into play, Melissa Blair found the back of the net to give the Spirit the lead.  The mid fielders and defense had their work cut out for them as they tried to keep Byron out of or end.  Mackenzie Turner came up with some nice saves and after having almost completed the 2nd half with a shutout, Byron tied up the score with only 4 minutes of play remaining.  Regulation play ended in a 2-2 tie and after two 5-minute periods of “golden goal” overtime the girls were scoreless and would have to go to the best of 5 penalty kicks.  With Sarnia up first, Melissa Blair scored one, and then Kristen Parkes scored the 2nd goal, and since Mackenzie Turner had such a stellar performance making 4 saves, a fifth shooter was not required.  Holly, Molly  - what a goalie!

The girls all played very well this past weekend and have found out that all that hard work at practices has paid off.  Thanks to the coaches for a job well done!
