Sarnia vs Chatham
June 11, 2008
Sarnia Spirit hosted Chatham last week in their 2nd meeting
this season. The Chatham team appeared determined to avenge
the loss a week earlier with a more confident and controlled
play. The relentless attacks kept the Spirit squad
scrambling to regain control of the midfield. Several
Chatham through balls had Spirit defenders #21 Amy Bennett,
#18 Kelsey Ann Prior and #6 Shannon Lapier busy foiling
attacks and clearing balls.
New Spirit defenders #14 Renee Deschenes and #9 Amy Elliot
fought hard and punished the Chatham forwards with good
tackles that contributed to few opportunities on the Spirit
goal. When Spirit did gain possession the play quickly
changed momentum with some outstanding passes and good use
of the pitch. Spirit had difficulty penetrating the markedly
improved Chatham defense however; with Spirit forwards #7
Shae Colman and #4 Lauren Handy being forced to struggle for
possession as they were double, sometime triple marked by
the Chatham defenders. #11 Laura Pugsley had an opportunity
though when she got a shot off from inside the penalty area
but hit the near post.
Spirit fought
on and at the 23rd minute center midfielder #8 Emily Sparham
fed the ball to midfielder #21 Amy Bennett who promptly
fired in the first goal from outside the penalty area. In
the 33rd minute Chatham followed with the equalizer on a
ball the Spirit failed to clear from the penalty area.

Score 1:1
The 2nd half
started with almost even play and possession. Spirit had
some chances with midfielder #20 Christina Vani
dispossessing a Chatham player to set up #17 Melissa Bennett
for a beautiful outside shot that sailed just wide of the
goal. Moments later another outside shot from #15 Brittany
Sefton sailed high over the crossbar.
The go ahead
goal came in the final minutes of the 2nd half, when Spirit
striker #15 Brittany Sefton scored from inside the 18yard
box on a ball fed from midfielder #5 Kadin Siopidou-D’Andrea.
