Sarnia Spirit U-12 District Vs. Wallaceburg
Thursday, May 29, 2008
This was the girls’ first test
of the year on the road.
The 1st half opened
with some good aggressive play on both ends, with the edge
leaning in favour of the Spirit who ended up receiving
numerous off-side calls that kept scoring chances low in the
early going. 1st half Goal-Keeper #16 Emily
Peckham made a nice stop in the 10th minute on a
shot from the right that kept things knotted at 0-0. Sarnia
opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a goal
from #21 Amy Bennett on a nice set-up from #15 Brittany
Sefton and #5 Kadin Siopidou-D’Andrea. The Spirit then
followed up with another goal in the 24th minute
from #12 Maria Vani who potted the ball with her left foot
after a great free-kick taken by #17 Melissa Bennett. The
Sarnia team then ran into some bad luck with several calls
going against them. However, the Spirit continued to play
strong and fired their 3rd goal of the match
scored by #11 Laura Pugsley on a nice cross from #12 Maria
Vani , through from #4 Lauren Handy in the 30th
minute. The Spirit scored their final goal of the half in
the 35th minute on a cross from #5 Kadin
Siopidou-D’Andrea, and scored by #4 Lauren Handy who placed
a well timed chip over the Goal-Keeper. The 1st
half ended in favour of the Sarnia Spirit 4-0.
The 2nd half started
with some good pressure by Wallaceburg resulting in a
free-kick just outside the box that was cleared off the line
by the Spirit Defense who continued their strong play from
the 1st half of the match. #6 Shannon Lapier,
#10 Sydnee Mathany, # 18 Kelsy Ann Prior, and #20 Christina
Vani all made significant contributions to the Spirit’s
defensive success making numerous runs to the outside to
keep Wallaceburg at bay. 2nd half Goal-Keeper #1
Kayla Griffiths then made a nice stop on a shot taken from
just inside the box in the 52nd minute to keep
the Sprit’s four goal margin intact. The Spirit followed up
with some good passing plays up-front between #3 Teighan
Chate, #7 Shae Colman, and #8 Emily Sparham resulting in
several attempts highlighted by a shot just over the bar
from #11 Laura Pugsley in the 55th minute.
Keeping with the trend from the 1st half, the
Sarnia team continued to see calls go Wallaceburg’s way with
a penalty shot awarded in the 60th minute which
resulted in Wallaceburg’s first goal of the match. #1 Kayla
Griffiths made a nice diving attempt to get her hand on the
ball, but was just short in making the stop. Soon after in
the 64th minute, Wallaceburg scored their second
goal on a shot from the middle of the box. Wallaceburg
continued to poor on the pressure and it finally resulted in
a goal in the 70th minute, leaving them only 1 goal down in
the late stages of the game. The Spirit pulled themselves
together and focused more on possession and ball control,
which led to a great strike from #15 Brittany Sefton who put
the ball into the back of the net during a scramble in front
of the opposing Keeper.
The Sarnia Spirit closed out the
match with a 5-3 victory. |
