Spirit
Suffers Loss to Sault Ste. Marie Civics
It was a
long way to travel for a league game in Soo territory on
June 28, 2008. In the opening minutes of the game, the
Civics came out strong for their home crowd. The Soo came
fast with aggressive soccer and scored first off a crossbar
rebound. A nice defensive play by Danielle Quinn avoided a
Civics breakaway and great defensive work from Carly Stamm
in a 1:1 challenge kept Sarnia in the game. Sarnia tried to
respond but a brilliant save by the Soo’s keeper kept Sarnia
shut out in the 1st half. At half time, Sarnia
was down by two goals. Sarnia was impressive in the 2nd
half eager to catch up by firing a volley of activity at the
Soo’s net. Jessie Kozachuk, Sarnia’s keeper, delivered a
beautiful save to keep the Soo at 2 goals and in the closing
minutes of the game, a loose ball found Nicki Parkes to end
the match 2-1 for Sault Ste. Marie.
Kitchener deflates
Sarnia’s Spirit
On
Saturday, July 5, 2008 Sarnia had its 1st league
match again Kitchener Spirit. Kitchener is currently ranked
8th in Ontario play. It was a flurry of activity
from the Kitchener side with this high caliber team
controlling the game. Sarnia stayed strong in the first
half holding Kitchener to a 2-0 lead. Jessie Kozachuck,
Sarnia’s keeper, definitely had a workout this game, but
despite many shots by Kitchener this day, Jessie made
numerous saves and played exceptionally well including a
tough save from a hard line penalty shot. Sarnia fell to
Kitchener 6-0.
Sarnia
Spirit U13 has a league break until August 7, 2008 and will
be recharged to face Waterloo Phoenix for the first time in
league play. The U13 girls’ next outing will be at the
Ontario Cup preliminary rounds held in Sarnia at Veteran’s
Fields on July 19th and 20th. |
