Sarnia
hosted Ontario Cup at Veteran’s Park on
June 14th and 15th.
The draw found them up against Southwest
London Tornadoes, Tecumseh Warriors ’93
Red, London City Falcons and London
Freedom. All four of these teams play
in a league higher than the Sarnia
Spirit. The Tornadoes are in 1st
place in the L3 league, with the Falcons
in 2nd, and Freedom in 3rd.
The first
game against the Tornadoes was a great
opener for the Spirit. Megan Moore
scored the lone goal for Sarnia in a 1-1
game. Sarnia played very well as a team
creating some nice scoring opportunities
and minimizing London’s chances.
The second
game vs Tecumseh was not as much of a
challenge for the Spirit. Only one of
the scoring chances was capitalized on
but Sarnia controlled most of the game.
Erin Alexanders scored the winner in a
1-0 game. Karly Dobbin earned the shut
out.
London
City had two players that had to be
shadowed constantly in the third game.
Spirit did a very good job of this and
shut them down to only a couple good
goal scoring chances throughout the
game. Again Sarnia had chances but no
goals. London won this game 1-0.

The final
game vs the London Freedom had little
less pressure on the girls as a win,
loss and tie was not enough for them to
be able to move on to the final round of
Ontario Cup. The girls played well and
passed the ball around beautifully.
Freedom got a questionable penalty shot
in the first half and scored top
corner. Sarnia did not give up, played
some great soccer and fought until the
end. Hannah Kennedy scored a nice goal
to tie up the game. Miscommunication in
the 18 yard box caused another Freedom
goal to go ahead 2-1. Sarnia had a
chance to tie it on a penalty shot but
failed to score with the game ending in
a 2-1 loss. Freedom won the round robin
and earned a spot in the Summer games.
