The Sarnia Spirit U15
L4 Girls’ Soccer team has captured its first
championship at the Middlesex United
Invitational Tournament. The girls allowed no
goals in the first three games. In the opener
they tied Byron 0-0 with Samantha Mellon and
Nikki Arthur sharing the shutout in net. Tori
Taylor scored her first two goals of the
tournament along with a single from Hannah
Kennedy to beat LaSalle 3-0 in the second round
robin game. The girls ended up in first place
after round robin play earning them a bye into
the semi final. Sarnia put Southwest out of the
tournament with their third shutout of the
weekend. Tori and Hannah each scored singles
to win 2-0. Karly Dobbin earned both shutouts.
The final team London Matrix was great
competition for the girls. Sarnia made some
beautiful passing plays but only found the back
of the net once. Tori ran the ball up the field
and crossed the ball to Hannah to put Sarnia up
1-0. They held onto the lead until the very
last play of the game when a free kick was
called for London to tie up the game. Two
golden ball overtime halves could not determine
a winner so the game went to a shootout. Sarnia
only needed four of their five shooters to win
the shootout 3-2. Sydney Mellon and Anna
Blysniuk scored with Megan Moore getting the
winner. Karly Dobbin played in net.
