Sarnia Fury vs London AEK
June 12, 2009
Unbeaten in their
last four games the Sarnia Fury hosted the
defending Provincial Champions London AEK on
Friday night at the Dante Club as the Fury
looked to further prove their ability against
their extremely talented opponent.
From the opening
whistle AEK looked to pressure the ball at any
opportunity. The defensive pressure by the
London team created a few early scoring
opportunities. It was not until the 25th minute
that AEK got the breakthrough their pressure had
earned them. A Fury turnover found an unmarked
AEK midfielder who hit a fantastic 30-yard shot
that found the back of Pat Dennis' Fury goal.
The AEK goal marked the first goal given up on
the season by Pat Dennis, and the first goal
given up by the Fury since week 1.
AEK almost made it
2-0 when another long range shot crashed against
the post.
The Fury were not
without their chances in the 1st half, albeit on
the counterattack. Fury rookie Denver Spearman
saw a good shot go just wide of the left hand
post.
AEK looked to extend
their lead in the second half. The insurance
marker came in the 60th minute when a Fury
defender was judged to have brought down a
London attacker in the penalty box. The penalty
was converted to make the score 2-0.
Instead of killing
off the Fury team, the second goal seemed to
spur the hosts on. Newcomer Justin Randall
looked as though he had put himself and the Fury
on the board with a header from a corner kick,
only to be judged to have fouled the AEK
defender in the process. Jordy Bettridge had an
excellent chance moments later, but a chip
attempt fell safely into the hands of the AEK
'keeper to preserve the 2-0 lead.
With Sarnia pushing
to get back into the game, the third and final
AEK goal would be scored from a set piece. A
well taken corner put the Fury under pressure
and a defensive clearance found the back of the
Fury goal to make the score 3-0 for AEK.
