The Sarnia Fury u-14
premier team headed down the road to Cambridge on
Saturday afternoon in search of their first victory
of the season. This was a winnable game and the play
was even. This was the fist team we played that
didn't have a distinct size advantage.
Sarnia had the first scoring chance only to have a
shot by Jacob Atkinson go just wide. The 17 minute
mark continues to be a bad luck time in games as
Cambridge found the back of the net on an open shot
from 10 yards. The 2 teams played evenly for the
rest of the half with no major scoring chances.
Sarnia began the second half with the wind advantage
but you wouldn't know it as Cambridge came out
flying and pinned the Fury down in their own end for
a good 10 minutes. Sarnia keeper Colton Bond made
2 huge saves to keep the score 1-0. Sarnia finally
cleared the ball on a long punt by Bond and a couple
bounces later the ball was on Blair Ried's foot in
the clear and he made no mistake finding the back of
the net to tie the game at 1-1. Cambridge poured on
the pressure again and Bond came up huge twice more
in the net to thwart the opposition attack. With
Sarnia pouring on pressure late in the match, and
on a corner kick left the back end unattended.
Cambridge quickly cleared the ball to the Sarnia
side to 2 wide open forwards who rushed in and
potted the winner at the 82 minute mark. Sarnia
tried to even it but came up short 2-1.
A great effort by the boys. They will get another
shot this Friday at home to London Marconi 6:45 p.m
at St Christopher.
