Sarnia Fury U14
Owen Sound Scenic City Cup
The Sarnia Fury U-14
District team, as well as a number of other
Sarnia boys and girls teams, represented our
city in the Owen Sound Scenic City Cup the
weekend of July 18th. The Fury played three
regular games, and ended up making it to the
finals as a result of their ability to keep
their "goals against" lower than a number of the
other teams in their divisions. During regular
game play, Sarnia's first two opponents were the
first and second ranked teams in the tournament,
proving to be tough competition to try to beat.
Game 1
saw Sarnia take on Wasaga Beach. The action was
fast paced, and Sarnia played well. But Wasaga
Beach was a strong team and played a very good
game. Sarnia ended up losing the game 5 - 3,
but the majority of the play was not in the
Sarnia end. Nick Speed only had to work to try
and stop 13 shots in total, saving 8 of them.
Sarnia's Daniel Cicchelli had one of his best
games, using every part of his body to stop
Wasaga's shots and turn the ball back for
Sarnia. Joshua Core was outstanding on defense,
helping to keep the Wasaga scoring opportunities
low. Tyler Vynckier, Spencer Charlton, and
Patrick Gagliardi all had close shots on the
opposition's goal in the first half. During the
second half, Spencer Charlton again came close,
as did Corey Soden and Trevor McEwan. The Fury
scored once in the first half, and twice in the
second. Goal one was made by Anthony Fazzalari,
who received a pass from Corey Soden. Corey's
pass came to him from Trevor McEwan. Goal two
was scored by Patrick Gagliardi from another
pass made by Corey, and goal three was off a
free kick taken by Daniel Vallee.
Game 2 was against the Aurora
Stingers, who were in first place going into the
finals. Sarnia played hard, performed well, and
kept the score against them low. Aurora won the
game 3 - 0. But Sarnia should be proud, as
other teams were losing to Aurora by much wider
margins. Nick Speed had to work very hard, and
he stopped 19 out of the 22 shots against him,
making pro worthy saves and bolstering the team
to keep trying for the win. Sarnia had a lot of
opportunities, and spectators saw some great
action from Nick Vozza, Kyle McNeil, and Kyle
McVittie. but luck just wasn't with them for
this event. As it turns out, keeping the goals
against low still secured a spot in the semi
finals. Way to go Fury.
Game 3 was
against Beaver Valley. Sarnia dominated the
entire game, and Nick posted his first shutout
of the tourney. Sarnia scored once, and it was
all that was needed to win. Corey Soden sent a
long fast pass to Patrick Gagliardi, who again
drove the ball past the Valley's keeper! Way to
go Patrick!! Corey Soden, Tyler Vynckier,
Trevor McEwan, and Patrick all had other close
shots on the opposing goalie during the game.
Final score was 1 - 0 for Fury, securing a berth
in the semifinals. Kevin Leatherdale played a
solid defensive game, and Kyle Mackin ran
circles around some of the larger opponents.
The Semi
Final Game saw Sarnia once again pitted
against the Aurora Stingers, who were ranked
first in the tournament. Sarnia played hard,
did their best, but could not knock the Stingers
out of the game. There were many close shots,
good plays, and great saves made by Nick Speed.
The Fury's defense were kept on their toes
during the entire game and had to work very hard
to keep the score low. The forwards and
midfielders had chances, but no one was able to
get past the Aurora keeper. Sarnia lost, with a
final score of 3 - 0 for Aurora.
Be proud boys; the
semifinal spot was a hard won place to be. You
made it there, you played as a team, you won as
a team. Congratulations to Aurora for being
such a worthy opponent.
