Sarnia Fury vs Petrolia
June 8, 2009

It was a hot night for spectators, and an even hotter night for the Fury U-14 players.  Sarnia travelled to Oil City to take on Petrolia, in their second matchup of the league series.  Petrolia's home field advantage was apparent from the start.  The fields are much wider than the Dante Club, and as such Sarnia had to work hard to get their game plays working for them, and unfortunately some of their passing fell short.  Had it not been for this, the game would have ended with a much closer score than 7 - 2 for Petrolia.

The first half had Sarnia racing up and down the field, trying their best to outplay the Oil Barons.  Patrick Gagliardi came very close to scoring, just missing the post.  Nick Vozza was awarded a penalty shot, and gained Sarnia's first mark on the scoreboard.  Spencer Charlton and Daniel Cicchelli both had a spectacular defensive game during the first half, showing the coaches that they could hold their own against the larger Petrolia players.  Twice, while Nick Speed was recovering from a shot on net, Kevin Leatherdale and Daniel Cicchelli stepped in and saved a mark against Sarnia.

During the second half, Sarnia had numerous shots on the Petrolia net, with four being very close ones, two from Anthony Fazzalari, one from Nick Vozza, and one from Patrick Gagliardi.  Three of those shots hit the post, and one from Anthony just missed it.  Nick Vozza took another penalty shot on a call against Petrolia for tripping Kyle McVittie, and again slammed past the opponent's goalie.  Spencer Gorman came to the rescue a few times during the second half, stopping the ball and sending it flying back toward the Petrolia keeper.  All in all, it could have been a tie game because Sarnia was hitting the mark, just not inside enough.  Hold your heads high Fury - you played a fair game using your skills, and not your size.  Better luck next time!
