Sarnia Spirit U10's in Kitchener Tournament

Sarnia Spirit U10 travelled to play in the Kitchener tournament on Aug 22 - 23. They were drawn tough opposition in Kitchener White, Waterloo A and Woolwich. Sarnia qualified in their group but lost a tough game to Kitchener Green in the Semi Final. Here are the teams results.

Sarnia V Kitchener White  (2 - 2 Tie)

Sarnia started against the tournament favorites and found the going tough in the 1st half.
Although competing well, Sarnia were 2 - 0 down early after some nice crossed balls from Kitchener that were converted .

2nd half Sarnia settled down. Sarnia defence of Alexa Eldridge, Morgan Waggs and Daphine Hibma were all playing solid to stop Kitchener 's attacks. Sarnia then got themselves back into the game when Sydney Caron found space in the middle and slotted a pass to Chloe Kennedy to shoot and score. Sarnia now with confidence pressed hard and created chances. Sarah McCormick had a long shot go close.  With time running out, Sarnia didn't give up. Carmen Handy took a corner kick on the right and some how managed to beat the goalie at the near post to tie the game 2- 2. Great result.

Sarnia V Waterloo A  (2 - 2 Tie)

Sarnia then faced the equally tough Waterloo. Once again Waterloo moved the ball well and created some early chances. Sarnia settled down and took the lead when Chloe Kennedy won the ball from the Waterloo defence and scored. The game was very intense and going end to end. Waterloo pressed hard and managed to score 2 goals to take the lead at half. Once again Sarnia had to come from behind. With time running out the ball broke to Mickayla Moses near the halfway line. Mickayla's 1st time hit lobbed the Waterloo goalie from 30 yards to tie the game in spectacular fashion. 2 - 2 final.

Sarnia V Woolwich  ( 7 - 0 win)

Sarnia now faced Woolwich knowing they needed a win to qualify.
A determined Spirit team was moving the ball well and got off to a great start when Morgan Waggs put Chloe Kennedy through to score the opener. Some good passing between Chloe and Daphine Hibma resulted in Julie Blanchette just shooting wide. Sarah McCormick then found space and put a nice pass to Mickayla Moses to also shoot just wide. Just before half time Chloe Kennedy made it 2 with a solo effort on net. 2nd half Sarnia knew they needed more goals to be save and kept up the pressure. Sarah McCormick had a powerful throw into the box and Morgan Waggs collected the ball and shot home to go 3 up. Mickayla Moses scored 2 more goals with 2 hard shots on net. Sarnia were now well in control and Woolwich had no answer to Sarnia's strong defence of Alexa Eldridge, Morgan Waggs and Daphine Hibma. With the game nearing the end Sarnia added 2 more goals, 1st a nice lob over the goalie from Carmen Handy and then a through pass from Julie Blanchtte to Chloe Kennedy who scored to complete her hat- trick and Sarnia to finish 7 - 0 winners. Daphine Hibma and Morgan Waggs had the shutouts.

Sarnia V Kitchener Green  ( 4 -1 Loss ) Semi Final

Sarnia were up against it from the starting whistle, when the Kitchener referee called a weak penalty 20 seconds into the game for seemingly a hand ball.
Morgan Waggs was very unlucky not to save the shot and Kitchener scored. Sarnia found it hard to get going and were under a good bit of pressure and quickly found themselves 3 - 0 down. At half. 2nd Half Sarnia got more into the game and came close with a long shot from Morgan Waggs hitting the side net and Carmen Handy also tested the goalie with some nice shots. Kitchener however, managed to score a 4th with a nice shot to the top corner.
Sarnia didn't give up and pulled 1 back when a hard Carmen Handy shot was saved but Chloe Kennedy converted the rebound. Last 10 minutes Sarnia did everything they could to but time ran out 4 - 1 loss.

Amazing weekend by Sarnia Spirit U10's. They showed they can compete with any team at the top level.
Way to go! Its been a great season.
