Sarnia Spirit vs. Lambeth
Lightning
July 6, 2009
The Sarnia Spirit looked to
continue their winning ways playing in front of a home
crowd vs. the Lambeth Lightning.
Sarnia dominated early. A
throw in by Vanessa Wardell found the feet of Katie
Barwitzki. The fleet footed striker raced down the wing
and crossed the ball to Vanessa Bucci. Bucci returned
the pass to Barwitzki but the shot was turned aside.
Barwitzki again scampered
down the wing and located Kristy Hodgins in front of the
net. Hodgins spotted Kyleigh Arthur at the side of the
net but Arthur could not beat the keeper.
Lambeth was unable to muster
any type of attack and Sarnia was finally rewarded when
Kristin Parkes fired a shot that the keeper couldn’t
handle. Arthur was “Johnny on the spot” to pop in the
rebound at the side of the net, giving the Spirit the
lead.
Sarnia continued to
dominate. Lauren Shaw passed to Bucci on the wing. Bucci
forwarded the ball to Wardell who passed back to Bucci
but the keeper denied the good scoring chance.
Claire Vanden Eynde head
manned the ball to Wardell whose shot was deflected to a
hard charging Bartwizki but the keeper was able to
recover and grab the ball just before the Spirit forward
could increase the lead. The half ended 1-0 Spirit.
Coach Mackay gave the girls
a hardy Pep talk at half, hoping they would capitalize
on their chances in the second stanza. The talk worked.
Parkes attacked the
Lightning net with a hard drive and Arthur pounced on
the rebound for a quick 2-0 lead. Vanden Eynde
maintained the pace and passed to Parkes. Kristin
dribbled through the defense and fired a shot for a 3-0
lead.
The Spirit smelled blood.
Vanden Eynde again found Parkes who sent a through ball
to Ashley Pettit now playing forward after a successful
stint in net. Pettit raced towards the goal but her shot
was thwarted by the Lambeth netminder.
Parkes again played the role
of ball distributor and saw Vanden Eynde wide on the
wing. Vanden Eynde crossed to Skylar Soininen who
hammered a shot off a defender and into the net for a
4-0 Spirit lead.
Sarnia tried to ice the game
when Pettit hit Soininen with a pass. Skylar turned and
laid the ball off to Wardell. Wardell shot for the far
post but a diving keeper denied the chance. The ensuing
goal kick went to Soininen. Skylar did all the work
herself and was rewarded with a big kick high into the
net for a 5-0 lead.
Sarnia was not content with
a 5-goal lead. A cross from the wing found Bucci in
front and Vanessa finished the chance for a 6-0 Spirit
lead.
Sarnia finished the scoring
when Emma Colman passed to Soininen and the hat trick
was completed with a blast past the exhausted Lightning
goalie.
Sarnia now has a comfortable
spot in second place in the 8 team league and look to
continue their undefeated regular season next Monday at
home vs. Norwest Panthers.
