Sarnia
vs. Chatham
Wed. July 22/09
The Sarnia girls played in less-than-ideal conditions on
Wednesday evening, causing a bit of a sloppy game, but
came away with a hard fought 4-2 win against Chatham.
They got behind 1-0 quickly, as Chatham took advantage
of a slippery ball that got away from the Sarnia keeper.
Samantha Eisenbraun evened up the score with a lovely
kick just inside the 18 yard box, but Chatham did not
let up, and went ahead again just prior to half-time.
Sarnia seemed to tie the score once again on a free
kick, but the referee ruled it was an indirect kick and
disallowed the goal.
Sarnia took that negative at the end of the first half
and turned it into a positive at the start of the second
half, with the entire team energized and running and
defending well. Lauren Wilson was especially strong,
hitting the cross bar on one attempt, then converting
her next chance to knot it at 2. Samantha Eisenbraun
then put Sarnia in front to stay with a beautiful run
and strike, which the Chatham goalie mis-handled. Sarnia
dominated play for the remainder of the half, retaining
possession for most of it until, with a few seconds
remaining, Katie Brandon-Wheeler knocked a strike in
from close range and let loose with an exuberant
celebration (it was her first game in a few weeks) and
Sarnia ran out with a 4-2 victory.
