Spirit  4  London City  0
June 10, 2009

The first half was great soccer as the Spirit dominated play with excellent passing and off the ball movement. Sydney Mellon scored a goal decribed by her coach as “one of the best I have seen in my career as a coach and I have had some great goalscorers come through the system”.

The first half finished with a 3-0 score. In the beginning of the second half, Tori Taylor made one of her patented runs from the halfway line and scored her trademark goal.  Jenna Prevost and Chloe Cadieux added goals to round out the scoring.  The defensive game was solid and Karly Dobbin once again was very secure in her handling of the ball to earn her third shut out in League play.

Sault 2 Spirit 1
June 13, 2009

Travelling to Sault Ste. Marie for a pair of games was a very tough weekend for the team with sickness, injury and no subs, the team fell short.  There was opportunity to win the first game. Marlowe Pecora scored early with her amazing speed and the team controlled the first half of play.  There were two glorious opportunities to go 2-0 in the first half but the Spirit could not finish. In the second half Tori Taylor hit the cross bar from a good strike.. As the second half progressed, the Sault began to press and they were awarded a free kick to tie the game.  The winning Sault goal was scored from a long shot that caught the outside corner.

Sault 3 Spirit 0
June 14, 2009

The second game of the Sault Ste Marie weekend was a different story. The team had more injuries and sickness and less energy and the Sault pressed and finally broke Sarnia down on an amazing goal. Spirit defender, Dani Girrard did everything right by forcing the player to the outside but her shot was pure quality and you have to give the player the credit. Sarnia had an opportunity to tie the score against the run of play as they broke the offside trap, but fired the ball just wide of the net. In the second half, the team gave up two bad goals as they were extremely tired.

Galaxy 2 Spirit 1
June 24, 2009

Putting this into perspective: The Galaxy is the favorite team to win Ontario Cup and the National Championship. They have a squad of sixty players that train in a professional setting and failure to perform lowers their value and thus they go down in the pecking order for team selection.

Sarnia played well against a team of this caliber and with Sydney Mellon’s early goal, held the lead until half way thru the second half.  Sarnia had very few scoring chances but on the few chances they had, the team looked capable of scoring.  Everything the Galaxy does is with speed. They pressure high, hit you after the play, and move into space to create the options.  Because of their individual speed and skill, they are always in possession of the ball and Sarnia is always defending or trying to win it back.   Karly Dobbin had a very busy game goalkeeping.  Galaxy very rarely deal with a defending situation because of their ability to move the ball quickly with pace and precision.
