The Sarnia Spirit U16 L3 girls soccer
team travelled to the West Niagara Invitational
tournament last weekend. They played in the U16 North
American Division.
The first half of the first game vs Waterloo was played
mostly in Sarnia’s end due to the extreme wind. Sarnia
fought hard for the whole half keeping it a 0-0 tie at
half. The second half Sarnia turned it on and
controlled most of the play to win the game 2-0. Megan
Moore and Jenna Prevost were the goal scorers.
The second game vs Innisfil was a well fought battle
ending with a scoreless tie. Nepean was the next
opponent. Sarnia came out strong and beat Nepean’s
defence a few times early in the game but Hannah Kennedy
was the only one to find the back of the net. The
second half was scoreless ending in a 1-0 win for
Sarnia. Two wins and a tie put Sarnia in first place of
their division.
They played Burlington Sunday morning for the semi
final. Marlowe Pecora had a great game scoring two
goals along with Hannah Kennedy adding her second of the
tournament to win 3-0.
Sarnia found themselves up against Waterloo in the final
for the second time of the tournament. Sarnia battled
hard the whole game as did Waterloo. Sidney Mellon let
a long low shot go from outside the 18 yard line to beat
the goalie and win the game 1-0. Wicked defensive
soccer was played all weekend to help Karly Dobbin earn
5 shutouts. Other key players contributing to the
championship were Samantha Mellon, Danielle Girard,
Paige Price, Carolyn Doidge, Chloe Cadieux, Elyse
Trudell, Morgan Breeze, and Tori Taylor.
Coaching the team was Kevin Simmonds and manager John
Doidge. Missing on the weekend was Anna Blysniuk and
coaches John Blysniuk and Dan Kennedy.
