Annual Walter Kirchner Tournament - Woodstock
June 18 - 20

The Bluewater Lightning participated in the Walter Kirchner Tournament in Woodstock this past weekend, looking to build on their gold medal performance in Strathroy 2 weeks ago.  Unfortunately, the Lightning would fall short in this tourney.

In their first game on Saturday, Bluewater would be matched up with West Hamilton Hammers.  The game was played on a small field which seemed to catch the boys off guard with several passing attempts finding the sidelines during the first half.  Hamilton was able to capitalize with a quick goal only minutes into the game.  Bluewater quickly took over the play from this point but were unsuccessful in finding the net.  In the second half, Bluewater maintained possession of the ball and kept the play in the Hamilton end generating numerous quality chances.  Unfortunately, the Lightning were unable to convert and settled for a disappointing 1 – 0 loss.

In the second game of the day, Bluewater played North London Manchester United and came up with a convincing 6 – 0 win.  The game started out fairly even until about midway through the first half when the Lightning began to take control of the ball with Lucas Ross scoring 2 goals and Dante Fuoco adding another to take a 3 – 0 lead to the half.  In the second half, Bluewater continued to control the play and added 3 more goals by Dante Fuoco, Chris Harwood and Mitchell Neal.  The defense played exceptionally well in this game with Josh Vale, Joey Ferrera and Chris Harwood quickly turning aside any pressure to the Bluewater zone.

Needing a win in their 3rd game of the day, Bluewater was matched up with a very strong team from Waterloo.  The first half of this game was very entertaining with both teams generating some quality scoring chances.  The whistle blew for the half with no score.  Unfortunately,  Bluewater was victimized by a lazy shift to start the 2nd half and within a few minutes Waterloo was able to build a 3 – 0  lead.  Waterloo took over the game from this point and added a late goal to make the final score Waterloo FC 4 Bluewater 0.   No gold medal this time, but some solid soccer performed by the Lightning as they would not advance but finished the weekend with 6 goals for and 5 against.
