The Bluewater Blaze 97's were back in action at SCITS
field June 1/10, hosting last years defending champions
from Petrolia. This was the first regular season game
between the two teams that played several close matches
last year with Bluewater holding the edge in season play
but Petrolia knocked them out of the playoffs in the
semi-finals.
The Petrolia team seemed more prepared to get the game
started, jumping all over the Bluewater team that seems
to be very flat. Petrolia won all of the early
challenges and was first to the loose ball and did so to
score the first goal of the half about 4 minutes into
the game. Miscommunication by three Bluewater players
failed to challenge a charging Petrolia player who just
blew right through them and sent a blistering shot past
a stunned starting goalkeeper. This seemed to add a bit
of urgency to the play of the Bluewater players but
Petrolia added another goal about 8 minutes later that
was similar to the first. The Blaze team did start to
show signs of life and controlled portions of the play
to end the half. Tim Kaldeway had a glorious chance just
minutes before the half time whistle to cut the lead to
2 - 1 but his attempted volley shot went over the cross
bar.
After a spirited talk at halftime the Bluewater team
came out and competed at a good level. Most of the play
seemed to hover between the two 18 yard boxes with
neither team having a ton of shots on goal. Jordan Walsh
did have an excellent run to the net and was hauled down
for a penalty shot with 13 minutes to go in the game.
Walsh took the penalty shot which was stopped by the
Petrolia keeper. Bluewater did have a few more offensive
pushes to close out the game but were unable to get one
by the Petrolia goalkeeper on this day. It should be
noted that Tyler Bennison, Tim Kaldeway, Colin Burchill,
Jared Bourque and Tyler Rand put forth really good
efforts for their team. The Blaze 97's are in action
this weekend competing in the Middlesex United soccer
tournament in Strathroy.
