The
Sarnia Fury U14 Girls team continued
to dominate league action hosting a
pair of wins over their second place
rival Chatham.
On July 8th at Suncor Park, the two
teams battled it out in a wild first
half that began immediately after a
heavy rainfall. The wet field kept
the ball slick and difficult to
handle but it didn't prevent
Sarnia's Teighan Chate from
scoring in the 7th minute and Lepine
Parsons from adding a second in the
15th. Chatham bounced right back
with one in the 17th minute but
Sarnia did not lose their composure
as Sadie Gibson put Sarnia back up
by two goals in the 19th minute. The
game settled down for a short while
when Chatham broke through the
middle and was able to close the gap
to one in the 37th minute. Gibson
picked up her second goal 4 minutes
later to recapture the two goal
lead. The second half was dominated
by crisper passing and less urgency
as the field dried out and Chate
bookended the game with her second
goal in the 83rd minute when she
pounced on a great kick by her
goalie Lauren Wilson and raced all
the way the up the left side to
complete the 5-2 victory.
On
July 12th the two teams met again at
Suncor Park. Sarnia was tired
following a 4 game run at the
Cambridge Heritage Tournament from
which they brought home the
Champions' trophy the day before and
were also playing without their
regular net minder and two of their
top three scorers. As a result, a
hungry Chatham team came out fast
and furious. By the 5th minute mark,
Chatham was up 2 - nil and Sarnia
looked to be in trouble. Coaches
Craven and Culverson settled the
team down and from there on
Chatham's opportunities were
limited. Emily Sparham scored for
Sarnia in the 21st minute on a
beautiful long ball that went off
the cross bar and down into the
net. Torrential rains started
shortly after that tally and Sarnia
was anxious to get a second goal
before the game ended due to
weather. Sarnia's depth was evident
as they stormed the Chatham end
repeatedly and were rewarded with
the equalizer when Candace
Linker knocked it in. The rains let
up but Sarnia continued the barrage.
The impressive rally was finally
completed when Alexa Leonard made a
quick throw in to Amy Bennett who
blasted a shot at the net
that rebounded off a defender back
to Leonard. She didn't hesitate and
took another shot that was deflected
just past the goalie on the short
side by Naomi Parsons in the 83rd
minute.
