Sarnia travelled to rivals Chatham on Monday in the 30
degree heat, knowing a win would take them into 3rd
place in the London District Premier League.
Sarnia battled hard against an evenly matched Chatham
side. Morgan Wagg's in Sarnia's net made a couple of
nice early saves as Sarnia found themselves under some
early pressure. Sarnia managed to catch Chatham on a
couple of breaks with Sarah McCormick breaking through
from right wing and sending a good pass to Julie
Blanchette but her shot was saved. Sarnia then came
close again with a great corner kick from Mickayla Moses
to find Chloe Kennedy in the box, again her low shot was
saved. Sarnia's midfield picked up the pace and Ashley
Edgar had a nice run on the left and shot wide.
At the other end Spirit's defence of Alexa Eldridge,
Daphine Hibma, Steph Maitland and Abby Zalewski were
stopping the Chatham attacks to take the Half time score
in at 0 - 0.
Second half, both teams were determined to open the
scoring as the game moved end to end. Fisrt Chatham
split the Sarnia defence and Sarnia's 2nd half goalie
Daphine Hibma made a nice stop on the goal line. Then
Mickayla Moses put a ball through for Chloe Kennedy, who
out paced the defence but was stopped by a great diving
tackle from Chatham's goalie. Sarnia's midfield battled
hard as Sarnia pushed for the lead. They finally got the
breakthrough. Hannah Coy found space down the
right wing, cut the ball nicely inside to Mickayla
Moses, Mickayla's solid pass to Chloe Kennedy was hit
1st time low into the net to go 1 - 0 up with 10 minutes
to go.
Full credit to Chatham, they pressed hard and had the
Sarnia defence busy. Chatham had a number of last minute
corners which Sydney Caron continously cleared and with
the last play, a dangerous high lobbed ball into the box
was stopped by Daphine Hibma in net and the rebound hit
high over the crossbar. Final score 1 - 0 Sarnia.
Sarnia Spirit's next outing in a tournament in Ajax 10th
- 11th of July.
