WOYSL Kick Off Challenge
It was
a weekend of hits and misses for the girls as they
opened their 2010 Outdoor season with four games played
in Windsor.
The 1st
game was played bright (more like cloudy and rainy) and
early Saturday morning against the host team Eastside
Kickers. Both teams shared some quality scoring
opportunities but neither defense would break and the
game ended 0-0. Ashleigh Pettit earned the shutout.
In the
afternoon the girls showed up to play their arch rivals,
North London, on a field that had been reduced to a mud
bowl from heavy rains. The girls battled valiantly but
with less than a minute to play, Sarnia failed to clear
a corner kick from their area and North London
capitalized on this chance to win 1-0.
On
Sunday morning, Sarnia faced Guelph Royals and although
they dominated the play in the 1st half, the
Spirit could not score. In the 2nd half,
Guelph cranked it up and in the blink of an eye it was
3-0 for the Royals. Sarnia managed to get one back but
it was too little too late.
The
Saturday rains had forced organizers scrambling for
playable fields and unfortunately the Spirit was put in
a position of playing immediately after completing the
game against Guelph. Sarnia’s last opposition was a
rested Waterloo team and from early appearances it
seemed like Sarnia’s back was against the wall. Waterloo
took a 1-0 lead in to the half but Pettit would breathe
fire into the girls when she saved a PK. A new look
Spirit charged back into the game and the girls were
rewarded with a tying goal to end the game at one each.
