Megalomaniacs win the Cup!
August 23, 2009
Dark
clouds were rolling along, rain loomed on the
horizon, and there was a chill in the air at
Lansdowne Fields on Saturday. It was perfect weather
for the Sarnia Ultimate League's Championship
Tournament in an intense day of intense frisbee
action. The only thing more threatening than the
weather, was the 5 teams with almost equal records
who were belligerent to take the championship.
The first round of action saw the third ranked
Megalomaniacs play sixth seed Hungate's Mom.
Hungate's Mom couldn't find a way to defend against
the Megalomaniac's strong advances, and the Megalos
took advantage to quickly gain the lead 7-3 into
halftime. Hungate's Mom tried to their speed to turn
the game around, but the Megalos defence blocked
most of their offensive pushes, and eventually put
Hungate's Mom to bed, winning 13-6.
The
second seeded Banana Hammocks played a fun match
against a combination of the seventh and eighth
seeded teams Red Army and Huckstables that could not
field teams. The Hammocks automatically advanced to
the semi-finals.
The
fifth seeded Bulldogs made up of mostly rookies this
season saw the biggest improvement of any team this
season. They were foaming at the mouth to continue
their recent winning streak, and in one of the most
intense matches of the preliminary rounds, faced off
against the fourth seed Delusions of Grandeur. The
Bulldogs used their entire team to hold the
advantage for the entire game, taking the
quarterfinal match-up 13-8.
This vaulted the Bulldogs into a semi-final match
with the top seeded Suspects. The Bulldogs now had
a rabid desire to get to the championship match, but
had to face the seemingly unbeatable, and fresh
Suspects, who had a bye in the first round of play.
This game was the surprise of the day, as the
Suspects had a hard time defending against the quick
passes and swift play of the Bulldogs. The teams
went back and forth in points up to an eventual 10-9
score, at which point time cap limited the game one
more point. The Bulldogs continued to show they
belong by scoring the crucial point to send to a
10-10 next point wins situation. The next point was
one of the longest in Sarnia tournament history, and
it had the attention of the entire field. After
some back and forths, the Bulldogs had a throw into
the end zone, but it was D-blocked by an amazing
play by Suspect Kevin Brown. Brown continued the
offence with a diving catch up field, and led to
winning point for the Suspects. Unfortunately Brown
sustained a shoulder injury on the last point that
would sideline him for the finals.
In
the other semi-final match the Banana Hammocks were
hoping to reverse the score of their most recent
regular season meeting with the Megalos. But old
habits prevailed and the Bananas continued to
struggle against the defensive zone of the Megalos
who jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead. The Megalos
were able to maintain the lead and win the game 13-9
with no female subs. The girls; Rebecca Fradette,
April Brethauer, and Melissa Gough not only kept up
with the game pace, but scored most of their team’s
points. The Megalos earned the right to face the
Suspects in the championship game, and each player
also received a premium autographed banana from the
always spirited Banana Hammocks to help them in
their conquest.
The Championship game was suspected to be intense,
and it did not disappoint the hoards of screaming
fans that bared the cold to come out and watch. The
Megalo's had not defeated the Suspects in 2 seasons,
and again had to play the game with no girl subs.
Once again the Megalos jumped out to a quick lead on
their opponents and for a while it appeared as
though the final might be a blow out. A timely
time-out call seemed to inspire the Suspects to
overcome the defences of the Megalos for three
straight points. After a few exchanges of point the
Megalos seemed to be gathering steam again and they
got within one point of victory at 14-9. But then
they hit a wall. Led by the handling of Brian
Jubenville, the Suspects had answers for every move
made by their opponents, clawing back to 12-14.
After an unlucky drop in the end zone for the
Suspects, the Megalos finally got the Ultimate point
as April Brethauer caught the long bomb for the
championship.
