Quarter-finals
The Ultimate Frisbee season came
down to one day, one playoff
tournament, one chance for the
trophy.
All games were to 13 points with
a 60-minute soft time cap (play
to two points more than the
higher score), 75-minute hard
time cap (play last point). The
exception is the championship
match, which is played to 15
points with no time cap. The
day’s first matches were the
quarter-finals where the Red
Army vs. Pants Party match
proved to be the most
interesting.
Red Army 10 – Pants Party 8
Seventh seeded Red Army came
into Saturday's playoffs with
their first win of the season
coming just two days before
against 2nd seeded
Pants Party. The first game of
the season Pants Party saw Red
Army lead for most of the game
before making a huge comeback to
win the game 17–16. With that
bitter defeat in mind last
Thursday´s end of season matchup
was a chance for them to finally
pull things together against a
team they felt they could beat.
With careful disc work and smart
cuts, Red Army was able to
squeeze a win out of a really
great team effort 15–13 final
score. Saturday morning Red Army
knew they had to be on their ‘A’
game if they wanted to win
again. To no one’s surprise,
the game was a tight 8–7 in
favour of Red Army when soft cap
time was reached. With a
confident group of young rookie
players, Red Army found a way to
pick up two more points to end
the game 10–8. The quarter-final
victory for the 7th
seeded team was a strong
indication of how much the team
had improved over the course of
the season.
Suspects 13 – Bulldogs 2
Megalomaniacs 13 – Banana
Hammocks 3
Huckstables 13 – Hungate’s Mom 5
Other quarter final matches were
not as close with top seed
Suspects beating the Bulldogs
13–2, 3rd
Megalomaniacs beating 6th
Banana Hammocks 13–3, and 4th
Huckstables beating 5th
Hungate’s Mom 13–5.
Semifinals
Megalo 13 – Red Army 3
Red Army’s Cinderella run came
to an abrupt halt in their
semifinal match against the
Megalomaniacs. Red Army
displayed great handling around
the defensive zone of the
Megalos, but they were unable to
work the disc up the field.
Steph Meacham of the Megalos
played stellar on defence not
allowing any passes down her
sideline. On offence, the
Megalos just waited for the Red
Army to make mistakes, and
counterattacked their
way to a 13–3 win.
Suspects 13 – Huckstables 5
The other semifinal match
between the Huckstables and the
Suspects was all about speed.
The Huckstables could not
contain the quick feet and quick
disc movement of the Suspects.
The Suspects’ long game
was destroying their opponents
for the majority of the first
half. The Huckstables switched
their man-on-man coverage to
their patented "fish” zone
defence. The zone stretched out
the points quite a bit, cutting
the long throw attempts down
dramatically, and slowing the
Suspects’ quick moving offence.
However it was not enough, as
the Huckstables never got going
on the offensive end, and
eventually lost out in a
dominant win by the Suspects.
Good handling by Jason
Powell, Brandon Owen, Bobby
Jubenville and Brian Jubenville
for the Suspects. Incredible
defensive efforts by Eric
Hawryluk and Jody Brown.
Third Place Match
Huckstables 13 – Red Army 5
In the third place match the
Huckstables decided to stick
with their “fish” zone against
Red Army. The zone proved to be
very effective in the rain,
forcing a lot of turnovers.
Huckstables rookie Scott Vail
stepped up his game on defence
using his height to jump over
his opponents and stop the high
throws. All three Huckstables
women — Jenn Thomm, Vanessa
Gillis, and Michelle Snauwaert —
displayed great endurance for
playing the position of fish
(marking the disc). The
Huckstables claimed third place
with the 13–5 win.

Championship
Suspects 15 – Megalomaniacs
7
A rematch of last year’s
championship match pitted league
rivals Megalomaniacs and the
Suspects head to head. Last
year the Megalos prevailed 15–12
over a Suspects team missing
their captain Kevin Brown who
was injured during the semi
final match. Brown was healthy
this year and ready to make an
impact on the final outcome.
The beginning of the game was
close as the teams matched
points up to 4–4. When the
Megalos scored to make it
5–4, the Suspects put on a power
line scoring the next two
points, and leading to an
8–5 Suspect lead at half. The
Megalos suffered a major loss
with an early hamstring injury
to handler Chris James, who
played through the pain until a
9–7 Suspects score, at which
point he had to pack it in. The
Suspects took full advantage
controlling the rest of the game
to their 15–7 victory.
This is the first Suspects
Championship in 4 years, having
lost in the finals the past two
seasons. Every Suspects player
had an amazing game, displaying
a very tough man-on-man defence,
which led to the win. Great
defensive plays and athletic
ability displayed by both
Suspects Brian Thorne and Carole
Wettergreen. For the Megalos,
it was the prowess of the deep
coverage Nathan Vosbourgh that
kept the game tight in the first
half.
The upcoming all-star game will
wrap up the tenth summer of the
Sarnia Ultimate Frisbee League.
The Suspects have won the league
twice now, tying the
Megalomaniacs and Hungate’s Mom
in that honour. Fall league
begins on September 2nd,
new players are welcome to come
out and try the sport. Contact
