Hoosiers Open
Regular Season with 3-0 Rout of Evansville Junior Carly Samp and freshman
Rebecca Candler both had a goal and assist
in the game.
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Indiana
University women’s soccer team opened the
2010 season with a dominating 3-0 victory
over the University of Evansville (0-1) on
Friday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
Junior Carly Samp and freshman Rebecca
Candler both tallied a goal and assist in
the game to pace a steady Indiana (1-0)
attack.
“We did some really nice things and had some
good possession,” IU head coach Mick Lyon
said after the game. “I was pleased with
our defending because we cut off passes as
they tried to attack towards the box, led by
Kerri Krawczak, who denied them access to
the box.”
Just one minute and 14 seconds into the
game, Indiana junior Carly Samp stole the
ball back after the UE defender intercepted
a pass deep in the Evansville half and
turned it into her first goal of the season,
and seventh of her career. The last time IU
scored less than two minutes into a contest
was Sept. 16, 2007 against Ball State with
current senior Chloe McKay doing the honors.
Then in the 23rd minute, Oriancia Velasquez
found the back of the goal from 12 yards out
on the left side for her first of the season
and sixth of her career. Samp put Candler
through to the endline and Candler delivered
a low cross back out to Velasquez who
one-timed it home.
Indiana held a 9-4 edge in shots in the
first half.
The Hoosiers continued to dominate play in
the second half, firing shot after shot in
the direction of the UE goal. In the
second half alone, the Hoosiers outshot the
Purple Aces, 12-6.
Candler put home her first collegiate goal
in the 87th minute on a 15-yard strike to
give Indiana 3-0 lead and give her three
points in the contest.
All three IU goalkeepers saw time in the
game, with senior Lauren Hollandsworth
getting the start and did not have to make a
save in 31 minutes of action. Junior
Lindsay Campbell played the next 30 minutes
and made one save before freshman Shannon
Flower preserved the shutout with one save.
Indiana defeated Evansville by the identical
3-0 score a year ago at Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana travels to Kentucky next Friday
(Aug. 27) for a 7 p.m. start against the
Wildcats.
