Velasquez and Samp Power
Hoosiers Past Central Michigan
Indiana outshot Central Michigan 19-8 in the game
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The top two goal scorers for
the Indiana women’s soccer team, Orianica Velasquez and
Carly Samp, both added to their totals on Sunday in a
2-1 victory over Central Michigan (3-3-1) at Armstrong
Stadium. Lauren Hollandsworth made three saves in goal
to pick up her 22nd career win, the third-most in IU
history.
“Our decision making today was much better than Friday
and it shows in the result,” Indiana head coach Mick
Lyon said after the game. “Carly got us on the board
early and then Ori made a special individual play to get
us the second goal in the second half.”
Just as they did on Friday night against Kent State,
Indiana (4-4-1) struck early in the first half, this
time it was Carly Samp providing the goal, her fifth of
the season, to give Indiana a 1-0 lead at the 11:26
mark. Ciersten Burks sent a long ball into the left
side of the box from her defender position and Samp
dribbled towards the middle and fired a shot. The ball
was deflected by a CMU defender on the way toward the
goal and snuck inside the far post. It was the second
assist of the season for Burks.
Late in the first half, Darby Hannon and Kaylin Clow
were both able to break free inside the six-yard box but
could not find enough time to place a shot over the
diving keeper and the IU lead remained 1-0.
The Chippewas were not able to mount any kind of a
sustained attack in the first half and the stats showed
that, with IU holding a 11-1 lead in shots after the
first 45 minutes of play. And of those 11 shots, six
were on goal which forced CMU goalkeeper Stefanie Turner
to make five saves. The one shot the Chips did get on
goal came off a corner kick, but Hollandworth made a
last-second diving save to preserve the Indiana lead.
Indiana continued to dominate possession to start the
second half but could not add to the lead despite a
number of great looks inside the box. The first good
look came on a centering pass from Samp that found the
foot of Devon Beach but sailed over the crossbar.
Rebecca Candler later sent in another cross that found
Velasquez’ foot but it too sailed over the crossbar.
Velasquez would get her revenge at the 72:21 mark when
she single-handedly gave IU a 2-0 lead. She stole the
ball off a CMU defender’s foot on the right side of the
box and dribbled around three other CMU players before
finding herself all alone 10 yards out in the middle of
the box and she drilled a shot into the top right corner
for her fifth goal of the season. It would go on and
prove to be the game-winning goal, the second of the
year for the sophomore forward from Bogota, Colombia.
Central Michigan was able to get on the board at the
87:17 mark on a shot from Jennifer Gassman that got
through Hollandworth’s arms and into the goal.
Indiana now enters Big Ten play starting with a Friday
night matchup against Northwestern at Armstrong Stadium,
with the start time slated for 7:30 p.m.
