Indiana Drops 3-1 Decision to Nebraska
Junior Carly Samp scored her third goal of the
year for the Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women’s soccer
team ran into a tough Nebraska squad on Saturday at
Armstrong Stadium as they suffered a 3-1 loss to the
Cornhuskers in the first-ever meeting between the two
schools in women’s soccer. IU junior forward Carly Samp
scored the lone goal for the Hoosiers, her third of the
season.
“We didn’t play our best half in the first half and
Nebraska took advantage,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon
said. “But I am very happy with how we played in the
second half and forced the action and got a goal and a
number of other chances as well.”
Nebraska (3-1-0) broke onto the scoreboard in the sixth
minute when Molly Thomas took a pass from Morgan
Marlborough and put a shot on goal that went off the
finger tips of IU keeper Shannon Flower and trickled
into the goal, just inside the right post.
Then at the 27:27 mark, Marlborough found the back of
the goal from close range following a nice pass from
Jordan Jackson to set her up and Nebraska had a 2-0
lead.
Indiana controlled play the last 10 minutes and it
culminated with a corner kick with less than 20 seconds
left. The ball was served into the box and Samp flicked
it on to the back post where Devon Beach had an open
header attempt but was not able to get enough on it and
NU keeper Tara Macdonald made the diving save.
Although the Cornhuskers had the lead, Indiana held a
10-5 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes and had a
5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Just after halftime, Indiana was whistled for a foul in
the box and Marlborough stepped up and deposited the PK
in the low right side to increase the Nebraska lead to
3-0. But from that point on, Indiana played with an edge
and was forcing all of the action.
The pressure finally paid off in the 59th minute when a
Nebraska defender made a mistake trying to play the ball
back to the keeper and Samp intercepted the pass and was
1-on-1 with the keeper. She gave a quick fake and was
able to punch it through the keeper and it rolled into
the goal to cut the Huskers lead to 3-1.
Just two minutes later, freshman Lisa Nouanesengsy
rounded up a loose ball just outside the 8-yard box on
the left side and drilled a shot towards the upper third
of the goal but it said wide left by a matter of inches
and Nebraska maintained its two-goal lead.
Macdonald improved to 3-0-0 while making nine saves in
goal for Nebraska. IU freshman keeper Shannon Flower
(0-1-0) allowed the two first half goals to suffer the
loss in her first collegiate start. Senior Lauren
Hollandsworth played the second half and made two saves
including a diving save on a point-blank shot from
Jordan Jackson late in the second half.
Indiana continues its homestand for the month on Friday,
Sept. 10, against No. 8 Texas A&M starting at 7:30 p.m.
