Gryphons Fall Short to Lancers, 64-59

Guelph, Ont – Despite making a second-half comeback sparked by graduating guard Heather Angus’ (Waterdown, Ont) hot hand, the Guelph Gryphon women’s basketball team lost 64-59 to the Windsor Lancers, at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center, Thursday night.

In her last game at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center, fourth-year Heather Angus was outstanding leading all scorers with 22 points and eight boards, but it wasn’t enough to lift Guelph to a victory.

After trailing most of the game, and by as many as 16 points, the Gryphons put up a furious rally at the end of the third period when they were down by 14 (40-54) with just under two minutes remaining.  Second-year Caitlin Marshall (Winnipeg, MB) sank a trey to spark the Gryphons 9-2 run, closing out the third with Guelph trailing by seven.  In the fourth period Guelph took advantage of a number of Lancer turnovers and found themselves within four points with a 1:20 remaining.  But Guelph was forced to foul down the stretch and a desperation three by Marshall with three seconds on the clock didn’t fall.

It was another tale of two halves for the Gryphons who have made a habit of late of coming out with a slow start only to turn things around in the second half.  After shooting 33.3 percent from the field in the first half, they shot an improved 42.3 percent from the field in the second.

Also getting on the scoreboard for Guelph was Rachel Hancock (Ingersoll, Ont) with 9 points, while Alex Russell (Paradise Valley, AZ) and Morgan Jean (Sarnia, Ont) added 8 points apiece.

Leading the Lancers with a double-double was Iva Peklova (Praque, CK) with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Three other Lancers were in double digits as Marissa Bozzetto (Windsor, Ont), Laura Mullins (Tecumseh, Ont) and Dranadia Roc (Montreal, QC) chipped in 11 points each.

With the loss Guelph drops to 7-14 on the season and have been eliminated from making the post season.   The Gryphons will close out their season this weekend when they face the McMaster Maruaders on Saturday, February 9 in Hamilton at 1:00 p.m.
